Selling a bike in the 3rd Millenium

So basically I’ve never sold a bike.

I vaguely remember trying selling something on eBay once and it was stressful as hell.

I think the only way I can fund an Ironman this year is to sell kit.

Good news is that I know tri bikes get nothing and so it’s my Cinelli Della Strada I’m thinking of pawning off. Maybe some hipster likes em.

How do you sell a bike and realise close to 874 euros?

I sold mine on Facebook marketplace.

Pain in the atse, but eventually sold a second hand TT bike for £6-700?

Facebook groups is possibly your best bet but brace yourself for a lot of cretins!

Market is very subdued though, maybe less so for something sought after or a gravel bike.

Sold my neighbours bike ( sad sad story ) on fb marketplace recently
If you have rim breaks .. be prepared for some low low offers .. ( there probably quite realistic now )

Facebook. I am aware of its presence :+1: So does it have advertising fees? People still rob you?

Yes it’s rim brake, but it’s a “classic” randonneur so..

Interesting to see what comes up here as we have decided to sell our Ti road bikes that have seen us through many races and had great enjoyment from but sadly are no longer being used.

No fees, you just put things on marketplace or see if you can find dedicated groups to sell bikes, eg there’s one for tri bikes but that’s no good here.

Pot luck if you’ll get someone genuine or not, I have a few times though.

Trying to work out what to do with my 2008 P2 too.

It has lived a full and active life & owes me nothing, and I want a new bike when we move back. Shipping it home would cost £200 or so.

Still ridable, but I have some doubts about how safely.

Was thinking of trying to sell it or even just giving it for free to a youngster here, but then I’d feel kind of responsible if they got hurt due to mechanical failure

Wondering about maybe scrapping it and just bringing back the wheels. But that also feels very un-Greta as it still works.

Any suggestions?

I’ve got a P3 that’s been on the turbo for years and is in a pretty awful state, was thinking similar about scrapping it but seems a bit wasteful.

Was thinking of just selling it as “suitable for a turbo” for a small amount. Probably could do the same with yours and then zero responsibility for it

I either sell mine to a known person on here or in my CC. Failing that I take it to BikeEX and take a bath, which I’d rather do than deal with randoms.

I was just about to put an offer in.

Ah, turbo bike is a good shout :+1:

It’s basically worthless

Yes, maybe a turbo bike for one of the people over there?

I’m about to buy a 2020 first generation disc break bike
They are pennies now due to fashion .. bigger discs, tyres, tech etc

Rim breaks even more so
I conservatively valued my six at 7 k 5 years ago
There probably worth .. 2-2.5 now ( total )

Argon 18 e119 tri
Argon 18 e116
Scott plasma tt
Felt f1 14 lbs
Focus izzalco ( 28 mm tyres )
Dolan Aries
All sram red or di2
So old that they are basically worthless

Yeah was thinking like a small amount of money just to avoid the classic Facebook or Gumtree total time wasters, even £10 filters out the total dross :joy:

I gave my old winter bike to a local charity that train homeless people in bike mechanics by doing up donated bikes and selling them on.

Doubt you have anything like that locally, but it removes the worry about road worthiness as you know it’s going to get a full service and check before anyone rides it.

I’ve been offered 500 + quid several times for my felt f1 ( especially in hill climb season .. crazy light bike )
But .. I’m retired and don’t need the cash at all
The rear mech is the “ sram red black edition”
Brakes the same
The 380 mm bars / stem are one of the lightest combos ever made ( eBay bargain !) and the tub wheels ( my LBS mechanic lusts after .. tubs .. worthless I’ll just give them to him !)
The crankset is a zipp vuka 10 speed crazy money all those years ago but still looks bling..
only takes 23 mm tyres so is useless on 2025 uk roads

The originalish (2nd Gen) P2C and P3Cs are solid bikes and as long as they haven’t been crashed or crushes, they are pretty bullet proof…

What size tyres will it take ??
I’d never buy another bike in my life if they all took 28 mm
