St George 70.3 WC - October

BA Premium Economy currently allows 2 checked in bags, one of which can be your bike.

Anyone know the latest on travel to the US re covid tests etc? It was a right faff when I went back in early June.

St George doesn;t sound dissimilar to 95% of US medium sized towns tbh.

The scenery even around town looks great, and looks like there’s some great state parks etc around. Both Snow Canyon and Sandhollow would be worth a visit in their own right if you were there.

Hmm, I’m mostly tied to Klm unless I travel to maybe Newcastle or somewhere and accept the parking costs.

Not sure an entry test is required now, they changed the rules a few weeks ago and are still deciding on further changes. Vaccination is still mandatory (not booster) as Djokovic can’t go to the YS open still.

Swim start at Sandhollow looks cool….

Looks like no wetsuit required then :joy:

You definitely needed your wetsuit in early May! The lake was filled with melted snow and the overnight air temperature was pretty low in the desert at 1000m+. It was one of those races where you put your wetsuit on early to stay warm. It should be nice and warm by October though :sunglasses:

I remember waiting for the sun to rise at the start and the light looked almost celestial as the sun came up over Zion National Park.

There’s an event schedule for the race now, age groupers start at 7:45. Nothing on the waves yet though, hoping I don’t get stiffed like in Nice when we were last so got the worst conditions and most of the aid stations were out of sponges etc :rage:

And I’m hoping it cools down!

Two of my club mates going out for this (Kent Langridge and his partner). He’s ‘pretty handy’

40 deg, well we had that acclimatisation day back in July. Should have knocked out a 70.3 that day :grinning:

Woohoo, might finally be getting sorted for this! I’ve managed to get the cancelled flight to San Fran rebooked the day after which is alright, and better still doesn’t have the stop at Paris.

KLM had added my bike to the flight before it got cancelled and should in theory be on the return leg, but due to the way their systems work they need to rebook the flight, then pass to the extra baggage department or whatever to get the bike added and send me the bill for that!

So, I’m hopefully close and will be sorted in a day or so. Then just need to sort the car hire and whatever I want to do near San Fran and before Sacramento.

Just need to do a bit of training now and might hopefully see you all there, I’ll have aged about 30 years though

What are folks thoughts on finish times, sub5 a good result?

I don’t think the bike course is quick and although they’ve changed the run course this year it still has a couple of 100 metres climbing I think.

I was thinking sub 5.

Run and bike are hilly but US hilly tends to be steady climbs with good speed on descents. I think they have wetsuit strippers (!), and bike catchers so knock a couple of minutes off transition……

That would be top 15 for me and I can’t see that happening, although last year’s field was mostly US only I think. Swims seemed a bit quick TBH, but a lot of them then put in 1:45’ish for the run.

Need to see the course and how I feel from the week before!

Really don’t see me getting near 5. 5:15 would be good.

I’ve asked that Facebook group if anyone has a gpx of the bike course

Wonder how many pro’s will appear for this, I’m sure they can recover in 3 weeks? I know Nikki Bartlett has targeted this rather than going to Kona and there’s probably a few of the 70.3 specialists heading there.

Been watching the forecast and it can be fairly chilly early in the morning, I’m guessing the standard practice will be the older age groups going later which probably means it might have warmed up but we’ll also get the warmer run! Bit of a no win situation really.

Must be taper time soon, chickenboy has started running again which is good news.

Yeah, the FB group saying the forecast will be around 7 degrees

Still wetsuit/non wetsuit chat there too, reservoir is about 22/23 apparently - lots of chat saying it’ll be chilly :man_shrugging:t2: That’s bloody bath like

Got our ESTAS sorted so I think it’s just a race licence and to get some dollars

I think it’ll be warmer than 7 but you never know, still hitting hid 20’s if the forecast is right so it can’t take long to warm up once the sun comes out.

22 for the swim is pretty warm, about what Maastricht was. Can’t see them being banned though.

I’ve got some dollars and booked a hire car tonight, just need one night depending on which route I take from Sacramento to StG.

And to raid the piggy bank at the end of the month to pay for it all!

Should be good chaps, training load looks a bit lighter this week.

What day are you all getting to St G?

I will get there late Tuesday.
