People think they need a watch that can record activity all week before recharging - they don’t. Charging a watch everyday is not a problem for anyone. They just think it is.
This is, to me anyway, an interesting acquisition by Strava. But then I think of FATMAP only from a skiing use, but it may well be useful for running/hiking/mountain-biking. I’ve not used it in anger in a few years but from what I’ve seen on some of the 'Tubers that they support it does look pretty decent.
Hey there,
I wanted to be the first to share with you some exciting news: FATMAP is now part of Strava, the leading social platform for movement.
We started FATMAP with a mission to make outdoor experiences more accessible to more people around the world. Joining forces with Strava will accelerate that mission and open up exciting possibilities to build new maps and experiences that have never been possible before.
As an existing member of our community, I want to assure you that your access to FATMAP will not change as a result of the announcement.
By becoming part of the Strava family, we are bringing together the world’s largest active community and FATMAP’s 3D outdoor mapping, enabling new and exciting possibilities to help people discover and explore the world.
What’s more, in the coming months we’ll be working on ways to take our mapping to another level with the help of the insights and activities from the Strava community and continue to bring you the best experiences to plan, navigate and share adventures.
Thank you for being a valued part of the FATMAP community. I am personally really excited about this next chapter and the potential it opens up to help people discover and explore the world’s wild places, safely and sustainably and hope you are too.
I’m not sure either, it doesn’t make a huge amount of sense to me as an acquisition; unless they’re trying to improve the mapping capabilities for Mountain sports - FatMap’s layers on slope angle, I think there’s something to do with when it gets the sun, and the like might be of interest to Strava’s existing mapping tech? And the way it renders maps into 3D is quite good… BUT I hope there’s a bunch behind the pay-wall on it (I’ve not invested) because while I find it interesting, it’s not as good as something like OutdoorActive for actually plotting routes and getting time estimates (although last time I tried to do anything that was a little non-standard on there it was a bag of dicks so I don’t know)
