I just spotted that new (?) perk. I’ve not heard of anyone who’s made a claim yet. Useful though. Could have done with that when I put my RD through my spokes two years ago and had to make the call of shame to my wife.
I think it’s been a subscriber perk for a couple of years, can’t remember if you need to register for it.
Apparently it’s £30 now and gadget and running race insurance to £75
Can’t remember if I’ve activated it yet
I haven’t claimed on it myself but a friend did.
Her Garmin fell off mid ride and was then run over by a following car. They paid out the RRP of an Edge 530 to replace her aging 520 with few quibbles.
I’m sure they’ll look at your profile to see if your story checks out for various circumstances but it’s probably in their interests to be as smooth as possible for those who do claim.
Great segment name and comments in Kat Matthews’ XC run yesterday. I follow a handful of pros to see the odd thing they make public.
Woah!
She’s in the South Derbys. XC league then?
I’ve ran that course!
Running for the army I guess?
Kat wore the vest for (and is listed as) Thames Hare & Hounds - who are based on Wimbledon Common - so running quite far from what is her 1st claim running club. I guess she has to race at TH&H as it’s her main club - not that she does many road/XC races (according to PowerOf10).
This was the Leicestershire & Rutland Cross Country Championships.
2nd place senior woman was Olivia Mathias (partner of Alex Yee).
Country champs are either where you live or where you were born IIRC, don’t think your club matters
Agree completely with @Doka on Komoot, it wants to route you off road.
Just got round to trying out the two routing options suggested earlier.
Garmin Connect (for comparison):
Pros: Not sure there are any … edited to add that place names are displayed for much smaller settlements than the other two
Cons: quite difficult to see the road options, grey/blue colour scheme is hard to interpret
RidewithGPS:
Pros: easiest of the 3 to see different road options, decent use of colour
Cons: all the trails are quite confusing but expect would get used to that
Plotaroute:
Pros: Similar to RWGPS … edit to add that the sceen cap is on street map mode, terrain mode is better
Cons: Doesn’t seem to bother with village names so took some effort to check I was plotting the same route as I had done on Garmin. Would make route creation more time consuming (although I have the same challenge with Strava to be fair when routes are in the middle of nowhere).
Thanks for the suggestions, I think strava premium is dead to me
I think I’ll Use both for a bit and will probably end up finding one better for my needs.
It’s that particular OpenStreetMap rendering that chooses to display so few names - they do it lots of places, assume that zoomed out you don’t care much about the smaller places, if you swap to the terrain map that shows names at that zoom, or just zoom in a bit when plotting.
Thanks JJ.
I did wonder whether one of the many buttons would turn on more text but the default certainly didn’t, even at high zoom.
I’ll have a play later on.
EDIT - I had a play and plotaroute shows small settlements if you zoom in (hamlets / small villages) but doesn’t name them.
Strava is actually worse in terms of detail, which I mentioned yesterday. No settlement shown and no name.
So Garmin does have a pro (albeit a small one), that it presumably uses google maps so displays more detail on settlements.
Garmin Connect seems to be down at the moment
Yeah. It has been since about 10am for me.
I was trying to sync a lunch time run to the watch.
Its back up now 14:00
Managed to sync my lunchtime workout to Garmin OK but it hasn’t pushed it out to Strava yet.
Just extended my Strava by another 12 months for £20 via ‘gift a subscription’ going through a VPN to Brazil. Very easy to do.
Can’t get that to work for some reason - just comes back in GBP
Have you defo got your VPN set to Brazil?
Make sure you aren’t logged into your Strava.
£20 for the year is properly decent!
You could gift us all one, if you’d like?
If I knew how to set my VPN to Brazil … and if Strava wasn’t due to renew in the summer, I might be interested.
But then again, even for £20, probably not.
Recreating routes that aren’t on my Garmin might be a PITA admittedly but also decent practice.
haha did you not get your email with the gift enclosed?
Must have typed it in wrong
The gift subscription adds 12 months on to what you already have so mine was due March 2025 but now it is March 2026.
