That’s a good motto to live by. I do get a bit fed up with reading some ultra race reports online by people who state ’ I’m wasn’t sure I could finish this but somehow I ended up coming (1st 2nd or 3rd)'.
Good to be humble but don’t let it it stop you being realistic and stating a goal. There are loads of us slow pokes that genuinely don’t know whether they will finish (100km and above races for me) and it’s disingenuous to go from one end of that spectrum to the other.
There is an industrial unit near me that is set up as a Gym/Physical fitness centre for men, the usual kettle bells, big tyres to move, squats, ropes etc. all done in group sessions.
Called in last night to have a look and all looked pretty good.
Left my number and got a call from them later in the evening.
They did the big sell about it being a journey and you do 3 sessions a week as part of a 6 week kickstart programme and you get help to meal plan etc. and the cost is £299.
I nearly shit a brick
Said that was way too much and I don’t need meal planning as I don’t need to lose any weight so the cost went down to £199, still said it was too much and that was that so will just get a move on and sort my garage out to recreate the same thing.
I know I thought that was ridiculous but they harped on about food plans and special composite weighing machine etc. but still!
I could get a bit of training equipment for that.
I pay £38 a month ( local gym ) including classes and hydrotherapy pool and am currently living there !
Some really good stuff ( free) on line for every sort of strength training known to man, big muscles, brute strength, power lifting, weights for cycling, tri, running and even hyrox ( which me and my pt are devising a plan from)
Some people are completely brand new and a 6 week starter might be a good idea, most people … waste of time for me.
Diet plans range from just awful to common sense in my opinion, I have seen one or two which are just introductions to personal nutritionalists… there not free
Not done any strength work for about 5 years now so just wanted to get back into it as i feel as weak as a kitten so had a look around but like you say there are loads of resources online so should be able to tailor what i need to suit me better.
In the process of sorting my garage out and going to get a squat rack and some other bits mainly for building up my leg strength to keep me going further into my old age
Sure you can buy some nice equipment for £300 but you need the discipline to use it. Fairly easy for it to just gather dust in the garage (speaking from my own experience)
Haha i know what you mean but hopefully if i do myself a good setup that is nice to use i will have the discipline, but time will tell
Garage is coming on well and going to set my turbo up with a TV on the wall so can link the bike and strength training together.
Little Victories
The gym has 4 squat stations - 2 big ones with a sh1t load of weights and 2 smaller ones with 100kg of various sizes. We’ve been mostly using the small ones and leave the others for the big dogs.
Been on 110kg (including bar) for a while and those little 5kg plates left on rack have been winking at me.
So whacked them on for a try and managed 4 reps at 120kg - 4th one was a bit sketchy, started leaning forwards and had to drop my hips a bit to get back under the bar but got it done.
Ps. Running was a long way from my mind after that.
I’ve seen one lad squat half his body weight for 50 reps unbroken then run a flat out km … I think? with about 20? Secs rest inbetween he was slowing rapidly at the end of the run. that is some grim shit
