Sub-20 5km Thread

That looks like a sub-20 to me :tada:  :confetti_ball:

Managed to get myself under 20 today, with a 19:48 at Bushy Park ParkRun. I’m going to train towards a sub19 before the end of the year and I need to lose a couple of kgs.

@JibberJim wad taking it easy and beat us by a second.

If you’d not been there, I would’ve been two seconds less at least!

Dragging this up but I need something to get me a bit more motivated again. Target is before NYD.

Hamstring seems to be alright now (fingers crossed) and slowly increasing the mileage and speedwork. But not been right the last couple of weeks so haven’t pushed things much.

Recent best was 20:46 on a slightly undulating course at Fountains Abbey a few weeks ago so hopefully not too much work to do.

Stretch target would be to get an age grading of 77% which means something like 19:30!

It’s on the internet now so I need to man up :joy:

I think you could do it Jeff.

I often wonder what I could get my 5 and 10km down to if I focussed on them. Best 5km this year is 22.37 at short notice.

Find a fast course and you’ll be most of the way there. Good tarmac paths where you can use the cheat shoes, no problem.

I wouldn’t get the proper cheat shoes out but maybe the flyknit’s.

I was thinking of getting a benchmark at the local fast course this weekend but the weather isn’t good and it’s covered in tree shrapnel at the moment like conkers and branches! I always get it a bit long as well.

Why not? They’re there to be used. Go for it.

About 10 weeks to have a go, make a change from longer events but not a great idea if you’ve got injuries.

Yeah not something I’ll be doing this side of Arc. (if I get there)

Are you not slightly triggered that that’s not a round number?

Like, say, 80? :flexed_biceps::flexed_biceps::flexed_biceps:

Haha, not as much as 76.90 :flushed:

Maybe when I’m 60 :joy:

I never knew this was a thing…?!

My park run score is 70.25% what ever that means.

I age up in a couple of months and Crewe is a
“ slow “ course according to the people with “50”
“100” and even “500” t shirts on.

Carbon plates, a faster course and some intervals should see that go up/ down.

As FP said of all the mad stuff I do, if I get an injury in the next two months it will almost certainly be running fast. Age is obviously a huge factor how many 55 year olds can run?
How many 55 year olds can run fast.
A 20 min 5 k at this age for me is a decent effort, I’m pretty sure I have the engine but maybe not the calfs, Achilles and feet required.

It generally compares you to the fastest recorded time for someone of your age. But the course, conditions, trainers will impact your time.

Plus, that time could be an ex elite athlete.

But it’s a bit of fun and you can see how quickly you are going backwards within your age group :joy:

Don’t injure yourself chasing a fast one though. Running breaks us!

Pretty sure parkrun use your actual age in their age grading, not your age category - as I have finished behind people in my category and had a better age grading - and vice-versa. It’s a bit of fun to sort the results by age grade to see if you finish higher that way than finish position, but invariably there is some 60+ female who bosses the rankings!

On running quick as an older athlete, uur club and area has quite a thriving masters race scene. It’s a real eye opener to see all these older folk still churning out really good times.

To illustrate, I did my first track race this summer in the vets league, and got put in the non-scorer race along with ~12 other runners ranging in age with plenty over 50 and some over 60. I was dead happy as I was hoping to run it steady to start and then ramp up, maybe get around 12 mins. Thought that would comfortably get me mid pack.

Nope - after the first 200m I was dead last, and realized how different the level even in masters club running is compared to the general population.

I see!
I was hoping for a big five year jump like we get in tri! Boooo!

Just a bit of fun but obviously helps next year.

Cheers

Oh there out there !

Did a 55 year old not get in the top 5? At outlaw full last year, and I’ve raced Oulton duathlon when a 60 year old got in the top 3 overall ( ex pro cyclist I think).

For what I want to achieve next year I don’t need to be able to run a 20 min 5k, I just need to be able to move forward whilst totally smashed to pieces with a hr of 170+.

Would like a long distance tri as well so as near to 11,12 kph for minimal effort would be great.

Lancs has some fast old feckers for sure
