Swimming Stroke Rate

You need to double that :joy::see_no_evil:

Like actually. Garmin only records one arm innit.

Yes, 201 total, 13 average then doubled.

Just one I picked from last week so deffo one leg . I work it out to 65 SPM which is slower than I’d do with a tempo set with the trainer @ 70-72. I’m 184cm.

Looks like I’ve got some work to do on, distance per stroke too…

might be a bit higher, closer to the 70, unless you accurately count the distance off of turns

obviously you have a small reason to be a bit higher than the usual athlete, but yes DPS

Just looked at my OWS from the last 3 weeks

32 SPM which sounds about right given I’m swimming to house music which is around 128bpm

Had a dip in the sea yesterday, watch said 34 strokes per minute. I guess it would be less in a pool because of the tumble turns.

Just looked at an aquathlon race from back in March, 36 strokes per minute.

Just timed the leaders in the men’s Tri at Paris half way through the swim, I reckon they were doing about 45-48 strokes per minute ??

leaders were around 80spm give or take

I was counting one arm only, like I think a watch does?? Or is it normal to double that

think this is why I’ve never quite got my head around swim SPM :grinning:

if we’re doubling, then my last 2 ow swims were 68 and 72 spm

we count arm pulls as strokes, not “stroke cycles”

68 SPM on my OW swim this morning so not too far from my pool 400.

I think this has been asked before, but can’t remember the answer. Would working on increasing stroke rate improve swim speed? Or is it more like running, where increased cadence kind of just happens when you go faster?

I did some CPD at another club in 2021 and got to work with a female para swimmer who had both legs, but no use of them. Had a really high SR, but was carrying two “dead weights”. Really good learning experience for me, and whilst I wasn’t there to change things, I learnt about how she made the best of what she did have use of, to help negate the effects of the legs. The High SR helped with body position and obviously huge core strength also to try and hold them up.

Yes.

so why don’t Olympic gold medalists swim at 200 spm?:kissing_heart:

just kidding , I’m imagine you are right for us mortals/ hobbiests. Just wondering if it worth a block of specifically targeting that

It’s simple maths. speed = sr x dps. Just increase both and we’ll see you in LA 2028.

Plus endurance to hold it…

Now you are over-complicating it.

That comes when you start talking about LT turn points and muscle substrate as some like to do…
