Runnersneed forum have a sleuth thread after VLM every year finding cheats from looking at timing splits and photos like the two you mentioned. Gets amusing

I’ve used Google maps location sharing successfully in the past, minimum fuss.
I used the app last year for the virtual marathon but it didn’t work very well. I think my phone disabled the GPS for that app one it locked, so you need to make sure battery saver is disabled for it. Not sure whether they have improved it this year.

Auckland marathon has just been cancelled (well postponed until late January) as well so I have all this fitness and nowhere to put it

Whilst I agree with the comments on the expo and I take every opportunity to avoid going there myself 
. Having discussed this with someone who had a stand at the expo…they charge the exhibitors/traders a fortune to be there on the understanding they will get a large number of (captive) people in their target demographic. This has the effect of keeping the entry fee down which you have to admit is pretty reasonable (~£45?) compared to other marathon majors (I think they also force you to an Expo as well) or even other big half marathons in the UK.

IM Wales strategically place rego at the back of the tent, so you had to run the maze of ‘essential stuff’ before getting there. (I’m sat typing this with my IMW hoodie on. Should have been £80, got it for £18, best not to ask 
)
