The 4w/kg thread

Was it not Ed Clancy who suggested that?

It came across that he was semi serious …?!
How far is too far…

At least we know he was clean

Not making any accusations. But assuming someone is clean because they’re willing to go to extraordinary lengths probably isn’t wise.

Read his book, I read it’s not about the bike and had my suspicions immediately!

They were well founded, Lance tripped himself up a long time before he went on Oprah.

Hutch had seasons were he went slower and he never improved % wise anything like some ped users did.

There’s two certainties in life… death and taxes.

That said I’d be amazed if Hutch was dirty, with his numbers he never really realised his full potential in a big competition and had some truly shocking results at times.

If he was he’s the biggest hypocrite ever…!

Yes feel the same about Hutch. He had some staggering physical gifts but blundered about making mistakes many of us have made and never quite made the most of them.

He never got beyond being a dominant domestic time triallist but had the genetics to have gone further.

But wasn’t one of the main threads of the book that he didn’t have the genetics? I read it quite some time ago but IIRC he got onto the fringes of the BC program and went to the Commonwealths, but when he was training in Manchester he had some physiological limiter? I still quite like the story that the helmet he used in one of his hour attempts was a bmx helmet.

He had the engine, the oxygen uptake and the the blood delivery.
Huge vo2, lactic thresholds etc.

By his own description his systems weren’t very
“ efficient”

I think at times nerves got the best of him, I can relate to that…!

His comment about how far the elite pro tters were in front of him, then despite modest personal improvements, the gap came down considerably tied in with the reduction in ped use in the paid peloton.

To quote the man I really believe he was “ properly clean”

Re-tested last night. Well that’s the “easy” 40% achieved~. Now time for some real work…

Not that far off my best ever now. It shows the impact of a focus on marathons in 2019

~If I used my weight from this morning, then I’d get a rounded figure of 3.5, but I see that as pseudo-cheating!

Testing tonight after a week off.

But unfortunately, week off was spent in the pub just about every night and then a weekend away eating everything in sight. Will likely be a W increase and possibly a W/KG degrease

I like the idea of a watts per kilogram DEGREASE

So ended up doing it this morning as was working until late last night, which meant the benefit of a reduced, albeit more normal, weight, which is a few kg lower than last month. Watts up 5%, w/kg up 9%. A lowly 3.1 w/kg but significant room to grow both watts and (reduce) kg!

Well done, what bike plan are you following?

211 watts
At 70 kg ish
For an hour on an assault bike…

Flat pedals
Sat bolt upright
No fan…
Av hr 168!?

At least I’m in the 3 w per kg thread!

The one and only way, my friend.
Ramps are rubbish.

Whilst my 80kg, 185cm, 285W machine was good for the 113, it ain’t gonna cut the mustard at Staffs or Bolton.

I’ll just do it at a higher % and walk the run in.
It’s all about the bike split, ja?

Stafford isn’t 113, Deva or Sundowner … but it’s not tri x either…

Bolton has the potential to be a good bit faster bike wise…

But it’s never going to be fast…!

Your a good runner… why would you over bike and die a thousand deaths on the run…?!

I’ve never had a good IM marathon.
May as well face the inevitable

I’m jesting.

Got a course recce pencilled in for next week…on the TT bike

Tt bike no problem.
If the original course had stayed I was seriously considering going on a crazy light road bike, just for the 15-18 kph grinding climbs and to help with my famously bad descending.

The new IMPROVED course is tt all day, I’ve not riden the new bits as part of the loop but there a sure fire improvement.

All my good results have come off strong runs especially the second half of the foot race …!?

Not sure how you do that when your ducked…!?

It’s a challenge for sure…!

Did a 1 hour workout on Zwift with my new FTP figure. Feels so much harder! A warm up with 1 min VO2 and 3 min @ FTP. Then 2x12 mins sweet spot and 4x1m VO2. That sweet spot bit was my old FTP!

I’m hoping a 4 week block at this new level and it will start to feel more manageable.

I’m no coach, but looking at that, I’d be thinking there’s a few different levels of effort there (VO2, FTP, sweet spot) but not enough of each one for a single session, so it’s not the most efficient training session. I know context is everything but at face value would that be a fair assessment?

Nothing personal intended here @Jgav more interested to see if others would say the same thing!

I’ll get in a quick disclaimer, this is the kind of session I might do if returning to the bike after a while, or an early season TT bike turbo to get used to the position again at different intensities.
