I think there’s a pic further up of me getting it; I could certainly have done with a walking frame afterwards!
I know they set off at different times but did you work out with load bearing, where you would have come in Clean Fatigue?
(asking for a friend )
When I did the winter event the load bearers set off in pitch darkness, and the clean fatiguers set off in the early gloom 1 hour later.
I think- don’t quote me on this- that the leaders of clean fatigue caught pretty much all of the load bearers by the finish. But maybe that’s not how it normally goes.
I have literally no idea how people carry that heavy stuff up and more importantly down the hills. My son was load bearing and I genuinely struggled to lift his pack into the car Also part of me (and it’s a big part) doesn’t really get why you’d want to…
The Sunday event I did both categories started together (they started an hour apart on the Sat). I think it just depends on numbers. I was alone much of the time, but going back up over PyF I was close to a couple of Clean Fatigue guys, who edged away from me going down to the finish; ironically no faster struggling up!
Yes to training! Because of the pandemic, I ended-up with 18 months load carry training. You wouldn’t want to do it without months of prep. If I’d done Clean Fatigue I would imagine I’d have been under 3h, but nowhere near the front runners who were low 2. Because I don’t get the opportunity to train on rocky terrain/paths like this, I do lose out to those who can, and the same would apply to Clean Fatigue tbh. This was easily the hardest part for me (the uneven ground/rocks); it’s just different to rough grassy ground.
Ah I see thanks. I lose out massively to fast technical descending (which is pretty much the opposite to the bike!), experienced mountain goats just fly past me.
I’m improving but it’s a skill on really gnarly terrain!
It was the downhill that killed me, have just pulled up the Strava and it looks like I slowed down on the final descent.
Legs weren’t right for 2 weeks after.
Probably just reflects being undertrained for that sort of challenge, but I did come by away feeling the potential for injury to my 46 year old knees and calves (as they were) was pretty high
Interestingly memory must be playing tricks as says 9am start, I remember it feeling like dawn
Was it snowy?
No snow or ice. Think it was about 7 degrees with little wind and good visibility, just some patchy cloud. Didn’t rain either. Pretty much perfect conditions really, a soft year!
Some of the pics of snow and fog in previous years look horrendous, reckon it would have been much more challenging.
Which group was running this race? it seems one of the organisers has been busted for being a Walt…
Link?
Not even heard of this event/company.
i assumed that it was a different group…but wasn’t sure…
I think Lofty’s presence on the Saturday was confirmation of no bullshitting on the one I did.
i will be back there on alternate thursdays from the 14th if anyone fancies a morning run…
AAE are definitely the real deal. There was another company running Fan Dance who were a bit Walty. The guy who ran it had never been in SF. When I did the training day with Jan he said that guy turned up at selection last about a week and that was the end of it.
I’m more interested in where the term WALT comes from?
Walter Mitty - Walter Mitty - Wikipedia
A fictional character with a fictional fantasy life.
Ah of course, doh!
Think the Military they are called bloaters as well. So often civies who claim military experience when they have none, or guys in the mil who claim SF experience etc when they dont.
Can also apply to wannabees who think they have some power because they have a high viz.
