Today I travelled up to London to meet up with some friends I used to work with about 15 years ago. A couple of them (now married) live in Australia and are here on holiday with their children.
We didn’t know when to go and found a restaurant near Earls Court where they are staying.
Restaurant was lovely and on the ground floor of some fancy apartment block near Kensington. Turns out it’s part of a retirement living complex for the over 65’s.
We had a lovely lunch, easy to chew meal - great for those with false teeth

As a parent, I’ve certainly noticed how differently kids ‘hang out’ and occupy themselves these days. Sleepovers seem more popular now, and hanging out at each others houses or online. Whereas in the 80s/90s we were out and about as kids on bikes or getting served at the pub with fake IDs if we were 17. When the weather was bad we just stayed at home and occupied ourselves right; because most of what we did together was outdoors?

Seriously though, pensioner affluence will surely decline over the next 20 years or so in the general population, and remain lower thereafter.

The ONS say that 2024-2034 the UK population will rise by 2.5%
The rise in pensioners over the same time period will be 15%
So there will be more of them about - whether they have the equivalent level of resources as the boomers is of course another question

I thought I’d read something recently that our population had just about peaked and they expect it to start reducing?

I thought that net immigration and the breeding habits of the immigrant population was the only thing that was keeping the population growing

World population is still on the rise but rate of the rise is slowing. I think 2080 is the turning point for population decline.

Natural change over the period 2024-2034 was forecast at negative 450,000
The forecast peak for the UK is 2054
By 2034 one in 5 will be retirement age (even allowing for the increase to 67) and 15.5% will be under 16
