So having a contact lens fitting now, I asked about laser surgery and whether the science had improved enough to make it worthwhile for my prescription.
She said…at your age you might as well wait until you get cataracts and have your lenses replaced.

My youngest sister turned 50 in march and got an eye test soon after and got told she’s got one! Shit birthday present!
They’re going to see how quickly it develops as some are slow.
Both my parents had them and I’m sure another sister said she’s getting one
And I’m utterly terrified of eyes!

One of the most devastating things to happen to me, the optician saying “typical for someone of your age”. I’m not someone of my age, that’s outrageous.

I’ve had soft contacts since I was 16 (41 years!)
I was told they help you not needing reading glasses for longer. I think they just weaken the distance prescription enough. I think I went to multifocal contacts at 50, and last year switched to mono vision. But recently I just keep my specs on unless I’m running.

So the young woman has a point then. I was thinking of putting in a “…just how old do you think I am?” but realised she had probably already seen my birthday in my notes 
instead I asked how likely that was in the next ten years, and she said it was entirely dependent on my use of sunglasses and brimmed hats.
So I’ll be getting new Persols for the birthday I think…and a sombrero.

I wore contacts for about twenty years and gave up for a few reasons three years ago 1) new salary, in the public sector 2) decided swimming in them “at my age” was no longer a good idea 3) I got distance lenses in Oakleys and was blown away by the ‘resolution’ I gained.
Trying them again today, I can’t read in the any more and I just need to figure out when if ever they will be useful for a whole day.
