That was 20 years ago… I was a bad bad man.

Couldn’t do that now,the very intelligent woman I live with would catch me out before I went over the side.

Rather do press ups or ride my bike these days… you young uns… fill your boots ( if any of them read the old fogey thread)

Mine is 5 years younger, then add on the extra 2 years for the pension change. Obviously depends on when I finish though.

I think the government are likely to change the state pension age before she gets to it as well.

But, she’s got money and very low outgoings so she might be able to live off them, or at least drop her hours.

We’ll see.

On the subject of pensions etc. the PLSA updated their figures for the 3 tiers of retirement yesterday for 2023/24 and as expected some big jumps due to inflation. For those of us with DB pensions we will probably get a reasonable increase and the state pension had a big rise.

The government and shitrags seem to be quite keen on avoiding us becoming economically inactive, presumably as we’ll pay no NI and less tax, and often that age group and demographic (e.g. retiring at ~55) are probably reasonable earners and therefore make big contributions, they can just get f*cked frankly

Best check my spreadsheet at some point :face_with_peeking_eye:

I think the push to reduce early retirement has many motivations, and for the government makes a lot of sense. Just not necessarily for the individual!

  1. They are trying to cut net immigration, which will result in labour shortages. Migrants tend to be younger and at a different point in their careers, but it makes sense (for the government) to try and keep the labour force bigger - or they will get even more wage inflation.
  2. The studies above suggesting that no work speeds up the ageing process, more people will have more reliability on health care sooner and for longer.
  3. A long retirement is expensive, and not everyone reads this thread before deciding they can afford to retire. More people are going to need government support later in life.
  4. Pensions are paid for by working people. More pensioners and less working people = not good maths.

Yeah, agree with most of those points albeit the state pension is only available when we’re 67 as it stands, in reality quite a lot of people won’t be in the position some of us are for a lot longer.

WRT actual aging, I think that depends as much on the individual, I know we are a very small group and have active lifestyles so I think it will be less of an issue for us, ( as long as I avoid you and fruity on a Thursday :joy:)

But, I’ve just wandered around town and went past a pub with what are probably the usual regulars sat drinking at lunchtime. That kind of lifestyle is probably going to lead to health issues sooner and the healthcare burden. Equally, I’ve known various people with healthy lifestyles that didn’t make it to state pension age!

I was 100% set to go next Jan. ( 55 th birthday)
Basically duck the consequences, I’m feeling less that way now.
But I don’t think it will be long after that, I won’t need loads but don’t want to struggle.

I guess just working 19 hours a week and no overtime would be easier, see how we go.

1st half marathon in over 50 yesterday and it was a lifetime PB of 1:32.

Considering for many years my best was 1:39 I’ll take that.

However fast I think I am, being 31st in age category brings it home that there’s many more fast people 50+ and I’ve still got a long ways to go :scream:

When I was in london a month ago, a young person offered me his seat on the underground. I said thanks and took it… one of the perks of being over 50.
