How lucky are you…
I’ll be 60 this year.
I didn’t want to be 50, but I REALLY don’t want to be 60…
Now, since I have a 10 year old son at school, for the first time in my life I am sometimes cagey about admitting my age to his friends and their parents…
I used to do Masters swimming, and the best thing about that is it gives you a very positive attitude to age. One used to actually boast about how old you were.

Following on from @Cobbie 's post on the colds thread it’s actually something I’ve been going to ask for a while.

Has anyone else seen their resting heart rate rising as they age? I’m sure when I used to sit still with my polar strap when I was in my early\mid 40’s it would get down to ~42. But now it rarely goes below 50.

I’ve just found the history on Garmin since I got my 945 and it would seem it’s been like that since ~2019 (age 49) but might be slowly ticking upwards. Appreciate OHR might not be quite as accurate.

It is usually in the low 50’s and a couple of times last year actually got to around 47 when I was on holiday and probably near a peak phase fitness wise, also might have something to do with summer and the warmth etc. and no stress from work.

I’ve definitely struggled with the cold in recent years, particularly when it’s also damp.

Is it just aging? I’m not as fit as I was in 40-46 but don’t think I’m miles off.

Anyone else seeing similar or got tracking? Partly got onto it because of a friend who gets down to 38’ish unless they have alcohol for a few nights and it rises about 4-5 BPM, definitely not alcohol related for me.

Yep, mine is the same. Used to be mid-high 40’s and is now mid 50’s. It drops down to 48 occasionally but is quite rare these days. Generally it sits around 54 now. I’ve no idea if that’s age, fitness or general health however.

I would agree that resting HR drifts upwards with age, I think that’s a well known and well researched phenomenon.
If you get fitter as you get older, you can probably hide it somewhat.

However, I also think that you have to be careful about the difference between recording your pulse “at rest” and your resting HR as measured by a device.
Pre fitbit, I would check my pulse when sat still and generally would see numbers in the low 40s. This ‘lowest’ HR can only be achieved by sitting very still and doing absolutely nothing.

Resting HR as measured by Fitbit is your (more or less) sleeping HR - the HR which is typically your lowest daily HR for an extended period.
The important thing (at least from my perspective) is that it’s consistently measured from day to day.

So, if I had measured my resting HR using a device between 2004-2009, when I was at my fittest, I suspect it would have been higher than the 41-42bpm I measured directly … but lower than the 55ish my Fitbit measures now.

I thought ones heart rate fell as one got older ?
E.g. theoretical max heart rate 220 minus your age (for men).

Your max HR usually drops, although mine isn’t far off what it was 10 years ago. Seems to be my RHR that’s changing.

Age 51, my average resting HR is 38-39bpm. Don’t think that it has every been much lower than this. My Max HR is 192, and has been exactly the sames since I got my first sports watch, a Garmin 910, in 2014

My max hr (of recent times ) 55 next birthday.
Was raised to 185 during those awful burpee jumps in a recent home made hyrox simulation.

I finished the subsequent 1 km run below 160, there quite taxing.
I never measure low anymore, but slightly higher than most of you I’m guessing , I’ll try it.
