The over 50's

And nobody wants to leave.

You’re joking right? There’s a 50 year waiting list

Another age grading boost for me recently :frowning: is it right that the aches and pains become more frequent? Wonder how my parkrun will go on Saturday.

M55 now feels a lot closer, and less than 2 years and I can really think about finishing work!

I moved to within 4 years of being able to access my pension last week.

It still seems like quite a way away and I shouldn’t wish away my life, but when I first did the sums and worked out that retiring at 55 was a realistic plan it was 10 years away, so time flies :flushed:

I look back to the start of 2020 and it doesn’t seem like long ago, another 3 years seems like a long time but will go quickly.

Also don’t want to wish my life away and that’s why I’d like more free time, especially in summer.

I am enjoying life though on the whole, there’s always going to be frustrations but nothing compared to some people and I’m getting better at shrugging my shoulders.

I think of little else these days, it’s come 12 months sooner than I thought it would which makes quite a big difference financially, I’ve just always had a job, not sure what life would be like without one ( part time obvs!)

Same as you just gunna have to roll the dice and see!

Guy who took my 1st aid course in 2015 was an ex “gov” and had enough so started his own 1st aid training company. He was obviously 1st aid trained (and maybe a lead) at the nick he was in (Sheppy in Kent) he gave us a lot of real world experiences he had dealt with, far worse than a coach would get, ie severe cuts, bad burns (you can probably joint the dots there)

Just checked & garmin says my fitness age is 20!

some mistake surely, it must be thinking of mental age

on the other hand, face recognition software sadly adds on years here, rather than taking them off.

Same here a lot of days, particularly if work is annoying me. I think a lot of people our age that are in a position to retire early probably do, but have a different mindset if they didn’t have that choice.

I saw something about a website called airtasker a couple of days ago, you can essentially advertise or respond to short term work or adhoc work, and get the ratings based on people that have used you. It probably helps if you have a trade and not looking for long-term contracts. Probably others but is something to top u the funds or give you something to do.

I have a plan currently in my head but things can change and short of finding a new job completely I just need to get on with it for at least 2 years and then start to think more seriously.

I can’t find mine now but I think it said 44 a few days ago.

Oddly when I checked on a Thursday at 9pm over winter it said I was in my late 80’s :grimacing::joy:

Edit: bugger, just hit refresh and it’s aged me a year :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Not sure I’m helped by a BMI of 24.8  I’d like to think I’ve got heavy bones and muscle bulk and not just my love of food :joy:

haha random number generator

I bet if I’d checked after the TTT on a Thursday night it would said “you died 30 minutes ago and the funerals on Monday”.

About three years away from retirement (hope to retire at 63) . Again like others here really don’t want to wish that time away so from next month I’m only working Mon to Thurs and having every Friday off. I see it as a way to ease myself into retirement without actually retiring. I work slightly longer hours to maintain the weekly hours (37.5) but with WFH (three days a week) this really is not a problem. I now have to make sure that I don’t waste those Fridays!

(Oh and I think that my fitness age is in the 40’s)

Only the speedy availability of a funeral is what makes that story unlikely

I’d like to drop my hours to 30PW and 4 days, and accept the reduction in income. Late 2025.

I’m reasonably sure I’ll get told no and will take it from there.

Although given the way things are going recently just getting to May 2025 will be a victory!

I would try. We both work at Universities. My change in working pattern was inspired by some one who did exactly the thing that you want ( a drop to 4 days / 30hrs per week) . I would start planting the seed before formally asking. Also we have a form to fill out for such things. Use the words ‘Well Being’ and ‘Work/Life Balance’ a lot in your application. Good luck

Thanks, I’ve loosely dropped hints about retirement at some point and I’m considering mentioning it in my imminent PDR as well as future ones

It will be supported at university level, but HR will say it’s up to your department and that’s where the problem is. Sometimes getting a post reinstated FT is difficult.

Anyway, definitely something to work on. Good luck with yours.

I’m at a real crossroads

I feel like a bit of a failure saying this but financially one more year and I’m home free, but… the chances of me assaulting some one ( I’d pray it would be a prisoner) are quite high, my tolerance for total (unts being totally (unty has disappeared, I have no idea why, possibly because I work with sex offenders?! But I feel like some members of staff need a good slap too… I think I’ve gone mad

I’ll need to decide in a few months I guess.

Is that some kind of Protestant work ethic linked guilt or something? To me outstanding success is retirement in one’s 30s. I’m targeting 49 myself. Congratulations on 1 more year to go . Sounds like you need a permanent break from the scum of humanity.

Why not milk the stress related leave (/suspension? Whatever it is) for as long as possible, then pack it in if you can afford it?
