Yes …
Herbert’s love Audis !
The “ odd “ time I boot it ( not an a B road and certainly nowhere near a cycle lane ?!) there is a slight “haze “ no thick black smoke which Just looks awful
The “ no smoke no poke” phrase is for chavs and is actually not true unless you map it to the max
300nm torque is way enough anyway, enjoy your day old timer
Was your Saga Holidays brochure waiting for you when you got home?
Quick ride this morning and out of the blue got a message yesterday from one of the real triathlon legends in this neck of the woods, Tony F.
For those who haven’t come across him he’s probably done as many quins and decas as anyone, along with multiple IM.
He’s decided to come out of retirement to get the fastest double IM time at v75!
As an aside, we were cycling down a country lane and Tony said that it used to be on his weekly long run during his ultra period - he’d do a 23 mile run after commuting from Chester to Liverpool on the bike (he’d have been in his 50s).
As we approached one bend he told me that he’d run into a cow here one night when it was very dark … “I was in a pretty bad way for a while, it’s like running into a wall”.
That’s the only thing in common id have with a legend like that.
I’ve run into a cow as well.they are indeed, wall like!
I came very close at Forestman, about 25mph and one wandered out in front. Had to hit the brakes but got away with it.
I’ve just realised he meant riding into a cow! Oh fuck that
I meant that I ran into a cow, literally
No, he was running, not riding.
The problem is that he gets properly in the zone.
Many years ago I did some navigation training with him, it was a waste of time.
He has gone wrong on an ultra on a canal towpath that had only one or two navigational choices in the whole 35 miles (I did it so I know).
Ultra triathlons on a 1 mile loop suit him perfectly!
Oh I see! Having said that, I’ve seen quite a few YT clips where folks have gone wrong on the Thames Path 100. ‘Just follow the river’ clearly isn’t as easy as it sounds
Well that’s my running days over. Gutted and has come as a total shock. My last LD tri was 3 years ago. I had gone totally stale after years of training, and so had a good 18-24 months of doing nothing. I’ve tried my hardest to get back to some exercise. I’ve enjoyed swimming, still not been on my bike and have tried to do PR as well as similar distance during the week, thrown in with a very occasional 5im trail run.
I used to run my marathon leg of the LD tri at a quicker pace than my best effort PRs but I’ve put that down to not being consistent and a few years older. Never really felt comfortable and a couple of weeks ago after a mid-week 5km run (trail), I could barely walk the next day. Took several days for the pain and limping to subside but decided enough was enough and got an MRI.
Shocked and gutted. I have severe arthritis between my femur and kneecap, and have no patella at all behind my knee cap. The fact that I’m walking around with just a grumbly, niggly pain is a good thing apparently. Will likely end up with a full knee replacement in a year or two. Still can’t quite believe it. Always thought it was just aches and pains because I’m getting older!
I have been advised no more running or high impact sport. Can swim, cycle and row and so went in the gym last night, for a light workout. I’d get out on my bike if the weather was any good - LOL.
Really sorry to hear that. I’m sure it will take some time to process your news but your long term health and fitness is more important. Best of luck.
Gutted. Although nice to get some explanation for your struggles.
My dad had something similar. Had a partial knee replacement 10 years ago, which has just worn out and got a full knee replacement last month. Told he can’t run on it, so he took up cycling and he still walks. His comeback from the first op was to walk the Thames path, source to London. Then he cycling LeJoG, and I did King Alfred’s trail with him a few years ago.
He’s swapped his road bike for one with electric assist, but plans to cycle Route 4 (roughly London to Bristol) as his comeback from this op. So apart from moving into a bungalow (for my mum as much as him) it hasn’t held him back.
That’s amazing. I plan to do some long walks and swim events. Need to get my mojo back to get back out on my bike. I will do but the crappy weather hasn’t helped.
Wish your dad a successful and speedy recovery.
He says he feels like a fraud. Already off the crutches and off the painkillers. A neighbour had a similar op at the same time and can barely leave the house and is on Morphine for the pain. I said to check they actually did the replacement and not just cut a hole in his knee!
Welcome to the club, in my case it’s no cartilage left in my R ankle.
I got very depressed when it became clear that I couldn’t run but eventually that passed and I found new challenges, mainly in cycling.
A knee replacement isn’t the end of the world either. I don’t know about running but there should be nothing to stop you cycling and swimming.
Getting over the disappointment is the main thing to start with and then imagining a different, exciting future.
Good to hear about your new challenges Cobbie. I’ll definitely do some swim events and look for some cycling sportives next year. Maybe some walking/navigation events as I love doing them with a map-reading friend, but I can get lost in a sleeping bag!
Sorry to hear that Homer but as Wheezy says, overall health more important. I hope can find something that keeps you active with the pain
My first event was the swim round the Scilly Isles in 2015.
What I found was that swimming wasn’t enough to stop me getting fat!
I also love hiking - there are plenty of navigation apps available for the directionally challenged
I’m having a senior moment and can’t remember my bloody work password! I type it about 20 times a day!
I’m know it but can’t remember the order as I normally do it on autopilot.
This is a worrying sign of the future, I’m heading as mad as my mother
