I was thinking the other day that life seemed to be back in a routine of eat, sleep, work, train, repeat and almost missed the early 20’s when we couldn’t race and found other things to do.
I did actually go for a walk on Sunday on a bit of the England coastal path which was a refreshing change, until I got into some flooding, ruined my trainers and had to walk back with trench foot and get the train to Boro
I get like this now and then when I haven’t got much to train for, and have been out of the routine, mostly because of the recent issues but usually get back into it fairly quickly.
Despite less training, I’m actually lighter than I was in my triathlon days; pretty much race weight all year now. My wife has commented on me looking skinny a few times, and I have noticed it myself in pictures.
Well, it would appear that I am officially a pensioner
In fact I’m a pensioner as of May, it just took Mercer from mid March until now to do the sums.
Lump sum landed last week so I now have a difficult decision to make … do I invest the max in a cash ISA and the remainder in a high interest account or do I ask for advice in the financial thread? (where, let’s face it, I won’t understand or listen to any of the advice)
It’s a possibility. Everyone says Di2 is really good but I’ve had a lot of issues with disc brakes on my winter bike so not yet fully convinced … and definitely not in a rush.
A modern version of my current bike is £4,200 - that’s double what I paid 8 years ago
I guess I’d recoup some money by selling the (Genesis Datum £700ish?).
I will ponder my options. Rather like with a car, it’s not something I really know anything about.
FWIW I have the entry level Canyon Endurance. Aluminium and rim brakes. It’s a nice enough bike but the geometry does not seem very fast. The other night on a 30km flat windless ride on a smooth road, 210W produced 32kmh. For the same power on the 2008 Cervelo P2, I’d expect 37kmh.
(Obv very different bikes for different purposes & I have made it worse by strapping all sorts of stuff to it and adding nasty heavy commuter wheels and tyres)
Yes, have done a lot of miles on mine & never had any issues whether on one day sportif type rides or bikepacking.
And the handling compared to the Genesis is night and day.
It’s like another language ?!?
But some good advice still
The key ( apparently) is get rid of all your bills ?!?
That said no (unty bosses, no (unty customers and no (unty workmates is just … heaven to be honest
I think he mentioned some “ consultation “ roles ?!
With “ long free periods “ that’s quite close I guess.
I heard “ I’m hoping to go part time at 60 “ a few weeks ago,…lovely girl with lots on… we all live our own lives but I really do wonder how long some people think there actually going to live ?
On the subject of stuff that makes you feel old, I was having a nostalgia trip this morning and used Google Maps and Street View to “visit” the village of Coity near Bridgend, where I lived from the age of 3 to 9. My memory is extremely clear of the area - the boundaries of the fields we used to play in, the ruins of the castle, friends houses.
In 45 years, it has changed almost beyond recognition. There’s a massive new development almost stretching to the motorway, which used to feel impossibly far away. It’s pretty much part of Bridgend now. My memory is of old stone houses but now most look like smart modern boxes.
The Victorian village primary school I went to has been pulled down and redeveloped as a small housing estate. All those memories now just feel like ghosts. The game we played where we used to spy on the dinner ladies. Chase and British Bulldog. The headmaster called Mr Stone, a small softly spoken man with thick glasses, I always suspected he had a Superman Alter Ego. The world’s worst mash potatoes and gravy at lunch time. My best friends Gareth and David, they were twins, how their world changed one evening when they were 8 years old and their Mum was killed along with 3 other mums driving back from playing badminton at Maesteg Leisure Centre. The fabric that housed those memories has gone & one day before too long all the people will follow.
