Sounds like one to avoid
And that’s the crux of it, really.
If you want to ride, don’t let me put you off
Go look at the TT forum and see what they all had to say about last years National 25 being held on that course…
…or, just drop your little yellow Google Maps Streetview friend onto the A50, just near the Toyota plant, then use the timewarp function to see the traffic changing through the years.
Do the same with the A11 around Attleborough for a comparison.
It’s quick, so loads of people do it, but it’s really not for me.
I’m not quick, best ever time was a long 58 on that Etwall course, did a long 60 on my local potholed J course last year, but just getting under the hour around here is an achievement (for me!)
I tried doing the 50, but was nearly taken out by a HGV on the Morrisons Distribution Centre RAB, so ended up quitting, as my HR was through the roof following the adrenaline hit of a near miss
He was so close I felt the air rush past me, so I have a very low risk aversion to TTing now.
Club 10 mile TT last night - great turnout, fully subscribed 30 riders! Everyone was very happy to be out I think so lots of smiles and catching up (distanced of course )
Overall managed a big PB on the course (G10/42) with a 22:44 - pretty decent on there (think previous best was a 23:30). Strangely though it was the lowest power I’ve done on the course. However that doesn’t tell the full story - legs felt super strong so was really gunning it up the hill at the start - averaged > 320W for the first 2 mins against an average 275W overall (which is only just above FTP at the moment). Seemed to either be riding at >300 or <250 - but perhaps that’s actually the way to ride a lumpy course.
Either way happy with the time and more importantly, just to get a ride!
@wheezy @Adam are either of you on there tonight? There were signs of some roadworks being setup yday evening - they’d closed one lane approaching the turn at Beare Green roundabout.
Great ride @PhilleusPhogg
I’m hoping to ride the final one in August.
I heard the road had been resurfaced in places.
Also saw some impressive times on that course last weekend!
There’s no resurfacing from what I could tell - still pretty awful all the way around. Yeah lots of fast times though, I know the improvements at our club have come from folks spending a lot of time on the turbo in lock-down
Wind direction last night was nice too - light cross wind which slightly favored the outward leg, but basically never felt like there was a headwind at all anywhere.
Always a bonus on that course especially with those 3 lumps on the way back!
I know it sounds wrong, but that course does really lend itself to a fast start, although even more so with a southwesterly, the uphill start can really hurt your time, but going hard doesn’t super hurt you as you’ve got such a lot of downhill/flat afterwards to “recover”. All of my fastest times were with hard starts, although I almost always did road bike of course and pacing strategy is a bit different.
Good to know @JibberJim - makes sense
Nice one @PhilleusPhogg
Currently away so missed last night, but some fast times, so looked like a good evening. I’m down for the next two, so looking forward to giving it a go in a fortnight.
One of our guys rode a 21:10 on a bloody road bike
No aerobars?
Forecast for Keswick on Sunday is calm (5mph), cool and overcast. Could be a decent day, it’s a reasonably fast course but I think my lack of riding the TT will go against me.
Nope. Not even a skinsuit
Strewth…!
That’s very impressive
The road aero race suits, are what normal people would call skinsuits though surely?
It’s certainly got so much harder to hold a wheel of people on normal club runs today than it was 10 years ago simply from everyone getting so much more aero on their road bikes.
Sure they are the right way round now?
I managed a whopping 2 second course PB on our evening 10 tonight
The wind had totally dropped so it was going to be quick, also lost a few seconds trying to clip in from the standing start.
Still pleased after going to the gym earlier and then ~90 minutes on Zwift this afternoon.
23:44 - AP 295W
Possibly a bit more left as well with the HR & power being slightly low but was good to test the TT bike before Sunday.
Overall course record or your own PB?
How many seconds did it take you to clip in?!
