The Time Trial Thread

Decent PB for me on L10010 today, couldn’t decide whether to go but I knew I had a 4:30 ride to do and if nothing else it was forecast to be calm, dry and fairly warm, and it would at least get me on the TT bike. A hard parkrun yesterday and poor sleep didn’t help the mood.

I took the first 25 fairly steady and it was obviously going to be quick and I didn’t feel as bad as I expected so picked the pace up a bit. After about 75 miles I was still feeling alright and thought a sub 4:10 was on the cards so tried to keep the power up.

I got to 160K but couldn’t see the finish line and my Garmin was saying 4:08 it was over 161k when I finished, I clocked it as slightly long by about 3-400M, last week’s was under 161K although I know they aren’t perfect.

Final time was 4:09:31, previous PB was 4:16:57, but I did 4:14.xx on the Stockton Wheelers 100 that turned out to be about 300M short.

Would have been about a minute faster as well but my rear mech stopped shifting around 100K, I’d got a notification on my Garmin before the start about a shifting battery being low (eTap) but it didn’t say which one, luckily the front was still working and I got round the roundabout and there’s a layby on about the only hill in the race, so swapped both batteries, note to self about keeping them charged!

I actually ended up putting in 2W more than last week.

AP - 237W
NP - 242W
IF - .83
Cadence - 81 FWIW, I do tend to push a bigger gear.

So, was really pleased with that despite being tired, compared to last week I had my Endura skinsuit on (still nearly castrated me though), better roads, calmer wind. Although there wasn’t a massive amount of traffic assistance.

Could have found a few more W probably if I’d sorted out the disc wheel, put the better tyres on and get some shoe covers.

Nice PB Jeff. Well done👍

Nice couple of rides there chaps - the EDCA course is a decent one even though it’s kerclunk kerclunk in places.

Hey Jeff , did I meet you at the National 50 last year ? Were you the chap that did Barca off 210W ?

Yes, it probably was me, had a bad day at the Nat50 last year, turning up almost late for the start (then getting my bike scanned for hidden motors) and that wind on the way back, my brake was also catching possibly for the second 25.

Slightly better year so far, but I’ll see how Hamburg goes in 2 weeks, doubt I’ll be hammering the bike as much that day if I’ve got to run a marathon.

Have you been racing much?

Jeff

Great work Jeff, good sign for Hamburg. Well done.

Not too much now I’m back to long distance training - it’s been five years since Wales.

Had an off at the start of the year which led to two months off with a nasty head injury and concussion problems.

All back on plan now and on track for a better second half of the year

I was hoping that my tandem holiday would have resulted in better times - but no! Still crap!

Got a 9sec PB on Tuesday, improving to 22:27. The weather seemed promising so did a proper warm-up on the turbo and everything  seemed to help. The guys ahead of me were about 20-30s down on the previous outing on the course (when I missed the turnaround point) so actually was quite happy as I’m gradually closing the gap on them. Power still not quite at PB levels (was 277W whereas I’ve averaged 290W a few times in previous seasons) so hopefully room to improve with a few more weeks of consistent biking.

B10/3a yesterday. Fast course but not a) with a headwind like that back and b) if you ride like a pussy and give up. 23:08. Probably last shot at a fast 10 this year. Best has been 21:44, not got within a minute of my PB.

Shaftesbury 50 this morning. Early start tough day, 27mph at half way, heading back saw this whittled down but zipped up the man suit and hung on for 1:58:00.

That’s two courses that are affected by a SW, the E2 more so as it makes the return such an effort.

It’s very rare but a weak Northerly is the best we can hope for on there.

I’m on the B10/3 in a few weeks time and have already started praying :pray:t6:

I’ve done loads of E2s and only had two proper fast days. They are magic though. One of them I got to the turn wondering if my Garmin had screwed up as I was not expecting to be there that quick.

Then thought maybe headwind back and that didn’t happen either.

B10/3 in my experience is more reliable, ie not as quick on a true fast day, but more decent days. E2 you get the majority of days slow. Snetterton B10 turn if using that is a bloody nightmare, 4 roundabouts to get back on the DC!

PS I’m doing the 12 hour on the B10 roads in Aug…:scream:

Lol - my 12 hour days are behind me. Do not envy you at all.

When you mentioned Snetterton turn I had to check the B10/3. Luckily that turns at Browick.

Did a 30 on the B course last year and four roundabouts at Snetterton on a trike were no fun !

Another small PB for me last night on the G10/59 again - down from 22:27 to 22:20 which is nice. Happy also to again be closer to the quickest guys in the club (dead level with one and 45s down on the other) who I’ve been using as yardsticks.

Was pushing a bigger gear last night so although I rode to a similar power, it feels like I can hold a better speed when going at ~85rpm compared to >100rpm, although too many variables to make an accurate assumption on that!

Yeah - I saw his time. He’s comeback quick!

Where is the GA10/8 - it’s not near Gainsborough is it?

It is !

Course code might also be wrong - that’s how I know it anyway.

Goes North-South-North and turns at Torksey.
Strong crosswind last night so had to behave with the wheel choice !

Wow - never knew there were courses out that way. I grew up in Saxilby and went to school in Gainsborough so know that road very well. I bet it was a bit sketchy on a cross wind! Much traffic? - people drive quick around there!

Small world !

We’ve got a few courses that go from either Saxilby or Torksey turn.

Road very quiet at 7, but you have to go off early to avoid potential traffic queues behind riders on the return. Myself and tricky went off 3&4.

It’s a reasonable course, rises more than I’d like on the return.

The Aegir run it

Hey @wheezy I see I’m your minute man on the Phoenix H50/8

Nice early start for us!
