Or just plain running!
Yeah, this one surprises me a lot, despite the recent judging issue. They should go back to the point for a scoring shot system. It was more transparent, and spectators felt more involved in what was going on (my OH commented on that in Tokyo, and said she didn’t want to watch if she “didn’t know the score”). It’s what they still use in Taekwondo for example
It’s not just a recent judging issue though is it, it’s every games!
Typical it’s the two sports my son has shown any interest in
I haven’t looked into the scoring for Olympic boxing, but I know some years ago, you’d only score a point if all three judges pushed a button simultaneously?
I think they got rid of that as it didn’t reward combinations of punches as the button system couldn’t recognise multiple presses too quickly.
It’s more subjective now with 10 points to the winner of each round and less (usually 9) to the loser.
technology has come on since then…
I don’t think it was the technology as such.
To register a point all three judges had to press the button within a certain time of each other, to avoid false scores by one judge seeing something from only their angle (not to mention corruption).
I don’t know what that time limit was, let’s say 0.5 seconds, but that would prevent a flurry of punches landing all being scored individually.
Over time they realised the system favoured boxers throwing individual shots rather than multiple which isn’t really in the spirit of the sport.
Boxing is a bit of an oddity in the modern Olympic era in that the best athletes in the sport aren’t necessarily the ones competing at the Games.
I appreciate that boxers use an Olympic medal as a springboard to launch a professional career, but maybe that’s not the way the IOC want the Games to be used
Hadn’t spotted until today, this year’s olympics are the only modern ones not to be held in a leap year, I need to get out more.
Surely 0.5 s would be far too great a time…even the most dopey judge should be able to respond and the average number of button presses in a reasonable time frame should suffice…
surely tracking software could do it now too?
nope…they want a professional career to launch an Olympic medal bid…
Yep ![]()
Stay home, protect the NHS, hands face space or something.
Hands, face, clean teeth. Or that was my dads bedtime routine mantra.
tag fly boss walk jam space face etc etc
And we know the IOC hate corruption as much as FIFA ![]()
So Pentathlon becomes swimming, cycling, running, shooting and fencing? I love it but not sure that cycling replaces the horsey stuff well. Maybe something a bit more tactical and skillful- some sort of martial art perhaps?
I’m not sure they have confirmed cycling as the replacement, that it just speculation. Given they try to host the event inside an arena, they would likely pick a cx / mountain bike event if they did go that route.
unicycle could make it more challenging…
