Yeah, taking both, will decide when I’m at Minehead. Will probably go with shorts but from memory, thistles and nettles in some places. Going with Speedgoat 4s. Have a warm skull cap for night, or a beanie and put a cap in the drop bag for daylight.
Good luck - that’s the weekend of dot watching taken care of
Give it some @FatPom. Smash it!
Cheers all.
Weather looks, challenging
I think the 110 milers are about to take off.
Good luck fatpom, will try and check on progress
Best of luck @FatPom weather looks shit but it’ll be the same for all!
Have a great race @FatPom
What do people do in these long races - truck all night long or have an occasional micro sleep?
Go full Lionel.
All night long
Longest i’ve been in a race, so far, is just under 30 hours. Annoyingly it was a 1730 start, so had already been awake for 11 hours or so before i had to drop out.
Just went bacl and pulled my activity for this race up on Strava. 2 years later and it still MASSIVELY grates on me that i had to DNF. Everything about the decision was correct, but man does it still sting like it was yesterday.
Ah right. I’d be able to deal with it at the time but it would destroy the week after with family and work! I’d like to have a go at one in the future though.
Yeah it’s annoying when you DNF even when you know it’s the right decision. Potential for you to have another go? How far did you get?
150 kms! About 15/16 to go!
Don’t think i’d go back to that exact event, as wasn’t particularly impressed by the organisation. But i’m planning on getting my ultra boots back on next March.
It’s the subtle things that hit you with the sleep deprivation. You don’t necessarily ‘feel’ tired, but your decision making goes to shit. Simple tasks become stupidly complex. I’ve done a 100 miler where i carried extra food the entire race without opening it, think it was dried mango, just because it was in the main section of my pack and i didn’t want to stop and take my bag off. I mean WTF!! That would’ve totally hit the spot and given me a boost, but the stupid part of my brain is telling me to not stop, just keep on trekking. Silly little things like that, but over the course of hours and hours they build up an accumulated effect.
I find that they put me in a bit of a hole for weeks. I can recover within a few days from the sleeplessness and the immediate DOMS/injuries. But i can’t go at all deep on another run for weeks and weeks.
What are ytou thinking @d.t ? Any particular race taking your fancy?
I’m always surprised by the lack of ability to keep simple patterns in mind; I’d try and distract myself with something like repeating HTFU with a left/right/left/right foot strike and after a period of time (who knows how long) I’d notice I was all out of whack.
Oh, and not knowing what kind of pizza I wanted at the end.
Nothing in particular - I might have a search for something that I could do in a few years time. Bob Graham Round gets a lot of press and a bit obvious, but it would be nice to tick off all those fells!
People tend to keep going unless it’s multi-way with refuge stations. This will be my first all nighter. Endure 24 doesn’t really count as I had the luxury of a van and took a decent rest on that one.
I’m very inexperienced at night running and I have a bit of head torch anxiety because I’ve not really tested properly, my own fault.
I have a Fenix HM65RT for main and a Fenix HL18 R for back up
Sounds great though - enjoy!
Cheers all. At Mums now repacking my bags for the 10th time!
At Woolacome. 31km 4.08 feeling it but ok
Big fat DNF at Ilfracombe. Left hip went bang again, we got lost 4times, I have never felt this low in a race. Couldn’t even keep up sweeper
Sorry to hear that FP. You have my respect for even toeing the line in these things…but I know that probably means nothing when the goal is to finish. If the hip went bang as you say, then not really much you could do it would seem.
Cheers Stenard. I’ve never felt anything like it. Hip was rubbish and my whole body was devoid of energy. I felt thoroughly miserable after Morte Pt and we got lost so much and cost well over an hour.
I never want to feel like that again so I’m canning races until I sort this properly.
