So turns out I got the date wrong! Was chatting with the RD last night, and he’s talking about ramping up prep for the race etc. I ask

ā€œwhy, it’s not for almost 3 weeksā€

ā€œerr it’s a week Friday mateā€

ā€œthe 11th, yeah?ā€

ā€œno, the 4thā€

All the whole my wife is listening in from the kitchen

ā€œI’ve got plans on the 4th!ā€

Oops!

Managed to do some shuffling and cover it all though. What a numpty. I also get one less week to train! Haha.

Is it 2008 still?

Don’t forget to hang the plastic map case around your neck for the ā€˜pro’ look

Petzl have just brought out a new running torch that goe up to 900 lumens at under 100g. No battery on the back either (which i don’t like - little head you see). I went to see what my current one is - essentially the same size and footprint - only 220 lumens! And to be honest, i use that on low most of the time to make the most of the burn time. Guess i’ve just got good night vision! haha.

Seriously tempted by it before Brecon in Dec, as mine is a few years old now. That’s all the reason i need right? Cos just buying a new battery would be too simple!!

I have a couple of Energizer ones; the better one pushes out 325 on max mode iirc. That’s enough to cycle with tbh. My only gripe with a lot of these powerful headtorches though, is that the beam actually encroaches on your vision i.e. it’s not projected forward enough.

Yeah i know what you mean, but the flood patterns on the Petzls are pretty good in my experience. And unless you have multiple beams at varying heights, then you’ll never eliminate that gap in your depth perception where roots and the like create shadows. It’s normally the small depressions in the ground that send me tumbling as opposed to any major obstacles. The same as when i’m on pavements - dropped kerbs are the devil! So hard to notice that slight change in gradient with just a headtorch beam.

Who remembers ā€˜Fablon’? We used to waterproof maps with it back in the day (well about 15-20 years ago). I would cut out the section of map required and ā€˜laminate’ it trying not to cover it in bubbles. It would slip into a leg/chest pocket much easier then, and unlike machine laminated maps, they would bend.

You’re starting on the 4th? I’m in for the 50 (54km actually) on the 5th, so will you be finishing at the same time as the 50k folks?

100 (actually 108) starts at 9pm on the Friday night. I think the 50 starts at 7am on the Sat morning? Both will have the same ultimate cutoff then of 9pm on the Sat (so 24hrs for the 100 and 14 hrs for the 50).

So yeah, the 100 and the 50 finishers will tend to flow in together. I’m giving away close to 1.5hrs with my late start, so it’ll be touch and go i guess as to whether or not i can hold off the fastest 50ers.

Haha, bet that was an interesting conversation\grovel :joy:

Race administration is more of a challenge than my brain is capable of😬

Holding of the fastest 50 finishers? Is that a polite way of saying we still won’t be seeing each other?

haha … i have no idea how it’s going to go. I just mean my aim is to not get passed by a 50ker. I’ll probably hang around for a while after … so just make sure you get a wriggle on FP!!

I was trying to convince my mate last night that i’m just treating it like a training run. He knows me too well. He knows i’ll be going all out to try to make up that 90 min deficit on my friends! We all call him Derren as he has this uncanny knack of subtely goading you into doing stuff. Guess that’s why he’s so good at what he does! haha.

We’ll see! Only a week to go now!

Good luck mate, would be great to catch up. I’ve ran a grand total of 12kms this week and off sick today

Oh dear!

I’ve done a 10km shoe test .Tried some Scotts and hated them. Spent the rest of the afternoon trawling the web in search of my next pair. I need the likes of @stenard and @Matthew_Spooner to get into trail running so they can do the hours of research for me!

Usual problem for me of stupidly shaped feet. I’m very tempted by the Altra Timps. I think i’d be fine on the 0 drop for most stuff. But i’m thinking about shoes i need to be in for about 30hrs in December! I just wonder if the 0 drop will come back to bite me a bit over that sort of distance.

Got a nice 25 odd km social run tonight. Should be looking at ~1k vert as well. So a nice evening session to try out the Maurten stuff that should be arriving by 5,30 according to DPD

I’d like to look at some different shoes. I’m on Hoka SGIIs but would like something that gives me a more connection to the trail, without compromising comfort too much.

Will do some winter testing!

I’ve used the Maurten a few times this year GB, I think it’s good stuff despite my poor performance at Hamburg it wasn’t too blame, in fact I think I’d have struggled to get other drinks down.

The gel’s are strange, pretty thick and best washed down with some fluid but again, don’t sit in your stomach or make you sick.

Be interested to see what you think, although at that price it will only be for big races.

Jeff

Took one bottle out with my last night and it was fine. it was quite hard to judge my calorific needs, as i was out for a long time (3.5 hrs) but it was all very easy pace, but with big hills thrown in (albeit most were walked).

I didn’t take anything for the frst hour and then spaced the Maurten over the next 2 hrs, along with my electrolyte drink.

No ill effects, and i didn’t get any energy lows. So will give it a go next week at the 100 and go for a 90% fluid only fuelling. I’ll take on any hot food at the aid stations, as they have a bigger impact than simply fuelling you when you’re running through the night. But when i’m on the go, it’ll be powders all the way!

LIke you say, it’ll be races only on that stuff as it’s bloody extortionate!

I’ve also bought a pair of Altra Timps and Inov8 X-Talon Ultra 260s to see how they feel. Though someone has just mentioned to me that the Altras are very sloppy over long distances. Unfortunately i have to make a snap judgement by running up and down the house!

Where else are you supposed to keep the map ??!
