Good luck mate
21k trail race for me tomorrow from Otley, there’s 4 different distances up to 50 miles.
I’m hoping for about 2 hours
Contemplating this event for September
Nice but maybe too far for me ATM.
Although I was looking at the ultra from Glentress in November
Nice. Same date as Dartmoor in a Day
Is that https://www.highterrainevents.co.uk/tweed-valley-ultra ?
Looks like it does a bit of the Southern Upland Way that I failed to reach when I bailed at Moffat due to heat exhaustion on last year’s UltraScotland 100, November should be cooler. Might see you there.
Yes, I did the 64k in 2019, quite a lot is runnable and it was beautiful on the moor.
But there’s also quite a long section both ways on path/track so full on fell shoes aren’t great
There was a section by the river which was boggy and tough going.
I mostly did it to get some UTMB points.
Dan Lawson is closing in on the National Three Peaks record. Current record is (apparently) Arthur Eddleston, 5 days 23:47, from 1980.
Dan is currently about 4.5 days and 400 miles in with about 30 miles left to go (including up and down Ben Nevis)
Ready for the off
Overcast with some hints of blue sky to come. Cadair Idris in the clouds at the moment
Enjoy!
Those eyes have seen some unspeakable things .
All the best.
My trail race was a mixed bag this morning but generally enjoyable.
The 13/20 races both started together and had fairly small fields, barely 50 between them. I went off with 3 others, 1 doing the 13 who was local and generally knew the route and 2 doing the 20. It was a fairly steady pace. When started climbing the other 13 runner started going backwards a bit but would occasionally catch up, then we put in a bit more of a gap but I started dropping back from the other 2 and was relying on my watch and tape when the route diverged.
We’d dropped down to a narrow dirt track by then which was thick with nettles and bushes out to inflict pain! My legs are still stinging on the quads. I was going at a fairly steady pace but could then see second place catching me again. By the turn he was only about 20 seconds behind and had caught me by around 13K where there was a steep road climb. I just about kept up with him there but I was really feeling it by this point with a lack of training and sleep!
As we crested he disappeared off into the distance. I was still hoping I could get under 2 hours but a couple of stupid nav errors probably cost me 60-90 seconds. I did start improving again around 18K but probably aided by descending and being back on roads\paths.
The nav mistakes meant I ended up with 2:00:34 which was a bit annoying, but the winner took about 6 minutes out of me by really pushing on in the last third. Was talking to him after and he’s also an M50! But I gather he’s in a bit of form recently and is a running coach as well so fair play to him as it was a decent time after a steady start. I think third was at least 40 minutes after so really was a thin field.
There was a guy trying to get a new record for doing a trail half marathon in under 3 hours with a 20KG backpack, I saw him as I was leaving and it sounds like he managed it!
Good training though.
Still with us @tunster ?
Well done Jeff
2 hr 45 min drive home which also involved picking up Mrs T from the Rewind Festival in Cheshire, followed by curry and now on second glass of red so time for quick race recap.
Drove over Friday night after work via Bala (first time back there since Bala half) -arrived around 10 - it was lashing down.
Up at 6am this morning for 8am start.
Stunning route. Cadair Idris and the following ridge lines were proper tough.
First 15km was really flat - really felt good and was zipping along. Then came Cadair Idris - proper tough. Descent was tricky too.
Far too long between CP’s 3 and 4 (17km) but given that this went on for a number of hours due to ascents of CI and subsequent peaks, it left most people gazing by the time we got to CP
Running across the bridge back to Barmouth was fab.
Overall great event in a beautiful location.
129 out of 222 finishers - mid table mediocrity upheld

Excellent, well done mate. Yeah, time between CPs can be deceptive when judged purely on distance.
At NC110, the biggest time gap should be between CP1 and CP2, which for me is approx 6hrs.
6 hrs is a hell of a long time!
How much liquid are you carrying?
I took 1.5 ltrs, two in the front and a spare 500ml in the back but both times on the stretch I’ve had trouble. It will be quicker for you but Wool to Combe Martin is a bit of a slog, mainly due to the slow nature of the Watersmeet to Ilfracombe section.
It might be closer to 4.5 or even quicker for you but it does seem to drag on. It’s cool though and at night, so you aren’t drinking tons like in the middle of a warm day.
British lady top of the overall rankings for the series as well - Scout Adkin - not sure I have heard of her before
