Longer form report:
Weather: 1 degrees at the start but was always going to be a lovely day. Wore running tights but shouldnât have bothered (although did keep my legs a bit cleaner). Removed my fleece at CP1 and tied it around my waist - never put it back on. Towards the end of the run put my hat back on and some gloves but 80% of the run done in a T shirt.
Reservoir number 1 - Dove Stone
The first three reservoirs were nice easy going on broad trails. After the third there was a stream crossing and then a couple of km scramble up a valley including a tough climb up a very steep hill which included the use of hands as well as feet.
CP1 was followed by a long gentle downhill with occasional ice patches but mostly on big paving stones which were added to avoid erosion. By now we had done a further 3 reservoirs and hit a long steep descent to number 6 - really enjoyed that section.
A nice bit of B-road well maintained trail followed with a circa 3km climb to Wessenden Head to CP2. Pretty much 100% walked that.

From CP2 it was a massive climb to Black Hill on the Pennine Way. Decent path - ice in parts. From the summit of Black Hill it was the off the main track and across the moors for what was an utter bog fest for the next 5km. Impossible to maintain any momentum. Feet constantly soaked. Sinking to ankles and beyond. It was also incredibly strength sapping. Route shown below.
Final CP at Crowden - resisted the urge to have a shot of whiskey that was on offer and headed out for the last 14km
That began with a 5 km climb which was the steepest of the day followed by another 2 or 3 km of bogs which were the worst of the day. Finally hit some tarmac next to the last reservoirs for a steep descent for about 2 km - fastest section of the whole route. An unspectacular final few km back to the finish at the Jockey Wilson Stadium - home of Saddleworth Rangers RFC.
Quick shower, a cracking meat and potato pie with gravy, pickled cabbage and brown sauce.
Entry fee ÂŁ27. Great value for money.
6 hrs 45. Slower than I hoped for but given I was only treating this as a training run and the awful conditions underfoot I will take it. Out shortly for Mrs Tâs long run.
100th out of 196 finishers with 4 DNFâs. Mid table respectability maintained. Winner did 3:56. Final place 10:55.

Sent Mrs T out on her own - painful big toe joint having stubbed it on a number of occasions - uncomfortable to run on

So two weeks to my baby backyard ultra.
Have been doing a bunch of double run days using my commute to work
10-13 miles in / 5 home
Not setting the world alight, but able to keep going despite not wanting to.
Did a HM into work on Tuesday - 1:54 - with no real issues
Glute Med felt a bit tight after a hour
Decided to get the bus home and then massage, rest
Felt ok this morning, so did the 5 mile loop from my house before the 8 to work.
Wasnât too bad and could run but tightness was there at about 4-5 out of 10.
Decided to cut it short and just do the loop.
Within an hour, was in a fair amount of pain with the glute very angry.
Hurts to walk at the minute, so not sure Iâm gonna make the start line ![]()
Thatâs tough Funkster. Iâve had a sticky glute for many years. Always the first to go when I build up the running. Itâs hard to shift in the short term. But prob best for you to keep the aerobic side topped up with hikes and bikes and rest until the event. Doing a lot of mobilisation, stretching and partic bridge and plank can help alleviate it.
Thatâs rough mate but itâs early in the season, so plenty of races left.  Heal thyself. ![]()
