Trail & Ultra Running Thread

I’m not a huge fan of the RunCensored podcast, but I did listen to the one with Mel Sykes earlier in the week. It was really entertaining, I’ve heard her on other podcasts but only briefly.

I like her accent. They were talking about promo shots and filming and she said something like ‘It’s all ok until I open my mouth’

What I didn’t know though, was the whole backstory about her brain surgery and how rare the condition she had is. Frightening stuff! :open_mouth:

Of the main races at UTMB week I have done them all except CCC and PTL

I will do CCC one of these days but have no desire at all to have a crack at PTL

I’d be too scared to do PTL - I’m not great with heights - although I managed to desensitise myself quite a bit in Canada with the amount of chains and iron ladders to get up some of those mountains .

Friend has told me that it is saying that Jeff Browning went into cardiac arrest at mile 80 on the TDS , looks like he has been put into a coma.

That is very bad news :frowning:

I know it’s all about the algorithm but based on what I’m seeing I think UTMB is going to have to do a lot to keep people going back in the next few years. They’re going to have to do a bit of reinvention and listening otherwise it’ll be a struggle to keep itself relevant by the 2030’s and onwards.

I saw a post yesterday to say one of the aid stations for MCC had run out of water/electrolytes etc - and there was queuing just to try and get more water - it was pretty hot too. Same happened last year too - thats piss poor imo. I must admit its making me think about if I want to do a race during UTMB week now …

There is also the matter of the UTMB week overcrowding the valley and the new Mayor (an ultra runner himself) has some strong words on this - good article here:

He’s also taking aim at campervans and motorhomes crowding into the valley in summer and doing something about limiting numbers.

The campervan issue has been happening for years and the valley has become less and less inviting to owners - this takes it up a notch.

Yeah I was the first to share that article (way up the thread - yes before you did too ). I suspect as I’ve engaged with the article that has led to my feeds being full of the anti-UTMB posts. I might add that a lot of the anti posts have been from actual entrants this year - so they’re not really helping themselves.

I think there’ll be a lot less competitors next year, or maybe they’ll pause one or two of the distances.

Fwiw the aid stations at ADH were struggling as well and I was probably going through in the first third of the field. Particularly for fluids.
