Firstly team, sorry, it’s been a long time been a long lonely…
Sorry, I needed a break from all things online.
Anyway, Lake District reccie of 1/2 X bike route today: Ambleside, Kirkstone, Ambleside, Langdale, Blea Tarn, Wrynose, Hardknott, Eskdale Green, Hardknott, Wrynose, Blea Tarn, Langdale and back to Ambleside. Only 56 miles, took about 6 hours incl stops back at car for water, then plenty of phots and sight-seeing, … that’s in my defence (spelt correct?) M’Lud/Lady. Weather stunning, non-stop blue sky… yeh sunshine, yeh heat, yeh hyper me!!
Found it quite tough, not much bike training over Winter. Coming back over Hardknott, that 1 in 3 at the top for what seems like 100m into a headwind, will be honest with you all, was nearly crying. At 59 my strength seems to have gone (lack of training I guess). My brain said oh can we get off and push… I had to be really assertive and tell it to f off! Last time this happened at Etape in 2007 127 Pyreneean miles blah blah blah.
Anyway, what shocked me most was not my lack of strength, but the fact that I was scared to get up any speed (I used to be a descending daredevil) due to the what seemed like shit road surfaces including potholes like moon craters… forget the traffic, avoiding those requires 100% concentration and can be quite a challenge when a car appears the other way on opposite side to pothole grrrrr.
Anyway, just wondered what the word on the street is re whether folk are using fatter tyres similar to off-road grit/ cross to cope with the shit road surfaces?
