Continuing my, mostly, consistent building with a 4 x run week of 60km this week, but I’ve started to add a few hills, so up to about 950m elevation with it. No proper steep stuff just introducing some lumps to the routes.
Finally starting to feel a tiny bit stronger. I’m not really going places much quicker, but it’s taking less effort to run. And I’m breezing up hills much easier. I’ll carry on like this through Feb, then start to introduce some sessions. Steadily though.
One measly run of 8.6km for me last week.
Three rides: One cold outdoor 90km and two indoor spins.
Three swims: One CSS club session, one solo 1.2km super easy, one relay/sprints club session.
Three total rest days.
A few of the runs were binned due to the weather and my revision schedule (exams and work take priority over a jog) so I shifted them to the weekend, but still could not do them due to
My parents being here.
An easier week of just under 8 hours.
Nice to see my fatigue shoot down and form shoot up!
CTL was at 105 this time last year, now at 89.
(Last year it plummeted after Feb/March, hoping for the opposite this year!)
Finally got back to something resembling training this weekend after over a week of a really annoying cough. Haven’t felt particularly ill but it’s been just enough to stop me sleeping and have been propped up on the sofa at 45 degrees as lying down made it worse.
1 Swim - 1 hour - 1750m (supposed to be a CSS test but just treated it as a steady swim)
1 Bike - 1 hour - 26km (easy turbo) - No commutes die to combination of health & weather.
Back on the wagon this week, albeit still not feeling 100%, with a very interesting flood dodging commute this morning.
I actually had my first recovery week of the year: weekly TSS was only 888.
Friday, day off work and training, spent with wife on Valentines day (I will earn many hours grief free training from this)
Saturday, easy club ride, mechanical issue with Di2, really impressed that I managed to reprogram at the roadside to synchro shift just with left leaver (when home found that Di2 cable in RHS had come loose.
Saturday afternoon 2 hours icescating with daughter. was good fun
Sunday, 2 hour hike up a mountain with wife. Even at 1100m temp was 15 degrees - this is February FFS, Alpine meadows full of flowers - utter disaster for the lower ski resorts
FTFY
Its a huge issue, really brings it home when you see how fast the Glaciers are melting in the Alps. You cannot dispute that global warming exists.
Recovery Week last week, handily coinciding with a week of nights, my first ever. Gym Wednesday and hard run Thursday killed me for the weekend, bad DOMS and wiped out. Shows the difference proper sleep and recovery makes.
Had Saturday Sunday off work and proper exercise, but walks through Yorkshire Dale’s both days. 2x9.5 hour sleeps but still not sure if I’m fully feeling getting back on it today.
Struggled with weights sessions, which I’m now ensuring I give more space between workouts. Skipped swims and did a little extra cycling.
Sadly there are still doubters :(, and in key positions.
Awesome hour run in the Vapes @ MP this morning
Fortunately, even in positions of power, I think has become politically impossible for them to ignore it now.
Time for some big changes, that won’t be popular, to be made.
A lot of big corporations with lots to lose as well though, with powerful lobbying.
Hopefully the momentum will continue to build.
8km very easy treadmill, 5.40 pace
Just started training again after a week or so off with a cough/cold and noticed my HR is unusually high.
Just done a couple of relatively easy sessions on the turbo but HR is @15bpm higher than the equivalent sessions before I was ill.
Should I read much into this E.g. is it an indication I shouldn’t be training yet or just body getting back on the wagon after a lay-off?
Ps. Resting heart rate is maybe a couple of bpm higher but within ballpark normal range day to day.
Road run with ‘Clare from the office’. Clare is mid 40s, weighs about 15kgs dripping wet and has a GFA slot for London!
8km, 38min, 4.50 pace. It felt a lot harder than that and doesn’t bode well for Winchester 10km on Sunday, eek.
Probably still recovering, I’d take it very easy or another day or so of rest to avoid it coming back.
I feel your pain!
I occasionally run with my daughter’s mother in law, in her 50’s also comfortable GFA London… I now know i’m in for a world of hurt when I get a call on Friday evening asking if I fancy running over to parkrun in the morning… its 16km, and her warm up pace is my tempo run… after 5km, i’m blowing out of my arse… she then regularly remarks that she’s surprised at my parkrun time, as she thought i’d be quite a bit faster given the pace we manage to run over at…
Possibly this, but on the turbo especially, I find the body quickly becomes deconditioned to the heat generated. There’s no harm in taking it easier initially, but my approach is that RHR is probably a better indicator of where my body is at in a rested state with regards to still fighting infection/illness.
When I came back from holiday, having done no turbo work at all for ages, and being perfectly healthy, my HR on the turbo was ridiculously high for a good week or two.
HRV would be the answer but most people don’t have it. For some reason it’s vanished off my 920
