Training - What Training?!

Another belated update to this thread…

April 2025

Swim – 5.4km
Only made it to 2 x club sessions + 1 x hotel pool + 1 x short outdoor swim! (Stupidly cold!)

Bike – 479km
Just too many other things going on, I was so tired for one session it only lasted 25 minutes!

Run - 79km
Biggest total of 2025 & my 7th highest month since 2014, so very good for me these days.

Time – 30h 17m
Anything over 30 hours is good for me these days, easily in top 20 months since 2014.

May 2025

Swim – 16.3km
Better club session attendance & this is my second highest monthly total since 2014.
Which says a lot about how poor my swimming is these days, compared to TT1.0.
After my swim on 1st June, my 2025 YTD total is now 57.9km.
Which is actually higher than my annual swimming total for 11 of the last 12 years!

Bike – 622km
Biggest monthly total of 2025 & my 8th highest month since 2014, so I’ll take that.

Run - 67km
Whilst initially disappointed that I didn’t build on April, this is still a Top 20 month since 2014.
May25 YTD = 305km, which is higher than my annual totals for 8 of the last 15 years!

Time – 38h 43m
Biggest month of the year and my 3rd highest month since 2014. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
(I lost all my detail training records from before 2014.)

Overall
Generally, I have to fit training around life, which means some weeks will be better than others.

Over the last two months, my lowest week was just over 3 hours, but that included a weekend in Ireland and my wife’s brother staying with us the week before we went. On the other end of the scale, last week was over 12 hours, my biggest week of the year and that included 5 x double training days. So, I will try to make the most of what training opportunities I have.

Cheers, Paul.

Have you ever considered doing one of those triafferlon things

First swim at St Andrews this year, testing wetsuit and acclimatising ready for coaching at a Swim England OW development day on Sunday (we have to get in to demo skills!). 1100m slow but I guess stopping for a rest at each buoy would do that. Shoulders and lower back ache now. Website said 14.5c but no way was it that cold was closer to 17 or 18 IMO as i did a short stint without my wimpsuit also.

I’m pleased to say that is very impressive. Hope you are very happy with that, you should be.

Ran 10km this morning, 5m40 pace & felt way harder than it had any right to. It was windy and hot but not enough to justify how hard that pace felt. Pancake flat too. Think I’m getting old

Trying to get back on the bike a bit more and drop some weight. Standard 27k bike loop home.

Ribs and back still effed.
Loving 4-6hrs sleep per night.

I’m up at @APM o clock.
I should drive down for a jog one morning :face_with_peeking_eye::joy:

Monday/Tuesday off. Fell down the stairs this morning, so packed in the bike commute. FFS. Train when you can, not when you want!

Slid down the stairs with my right leg bent backwards under me, grabbed the right hand bannister - so my back/shoulders are painful, and right leg bruising.

Aiming to try swimming but the aches are between the shoulder blades.

Root cause? I think the running and cycling polish my heels so I’m going to have to start wearing slippers upstairs.

FFS.

Being nervous of my knee, did an hour on the treadmill so that if it started giving me gip I could just stop without then having to get home

Chuffed that no pain and no discomfort at all - made me feel a lot better about SDW100 in 10 days - put me in a right good mood until I finished running to realise that I hadn’t started my watch - therefore it’s not on Strava etc etc

2200m focus on 100s of varying speed/effort

There was a proper fish in the pool zooming up and down, shame I couldn’t see his technique. Must’ve been 1:20 pace probably 200s. My workout called for fins for some hard fifties at the end and he was still putting seconds into me. At least his breathing was audible when resting…

Gym and 1hr15 on Zwift in the evening. El Nino having a week or two off swimming for exam period is great for my fitness
Next week is work experience, maybe get a few more evenings to myself
