Training - What Training?!

Ran the Butser hill challenge many years ago. And originally from Liss so know the area well. Good day for it today!

Does the turbo move the front up so it feels like your climbing…!?

Sorry for the daft question my turbo is like me…

Old and dumb!

Not mine. You can get an attachment that does that, I think it’s a Kickr Climb?

I just slump over the bars in a stance that makes Cadel Evans look positively Pantani-esque.

Same pain…!!

I put my forks on a box … felt like something was going to give… not me for once… sacked it.

The Aussie got the job done and was probably clean …

I do have a small wheel block I got about 20 yrs ago. It’s about the size of a house brick and has a groove for 27" one side and 26" the other.

ETA: I didn’t mean Evans was dirty, I meant he had a climbing style that only his mother could love.

All the talk of longer rides rubbed off on me. Out with a club mate this morning, but intended to head off and go longer after we got back near London. During the ride, managed to convince him to come along for the duration. In the end, we only did just short of a 100 miles, but still the longest ride for both of us since Ironman Copenhagen in 2018 (distance wise…the 8hrs we both took at the Etape last year was different again!). Took in some key climbs in both Kent and Surrey.

Anyway, loved it. Felt so strong by the end. Second fastest time ever up Box, and just felt like I was cruising. Could have kept going a lot longer, but my mate was in the hurt locker a bit! The best bit was stumbling across a pub doing takeaway beers and bbq burgers at Coldharbour. It was lunchtime. We were hungry. Why not! The sun decided to make a strong appearance about that time too. Lovely!

I got that…

Never heard cuddles was … ever.

Got a front wheel holder mounted on some tri book I’ve never read!

But I mean raising the wheel up so it simulates climbing and uses a different peddling action and muscles slightly…!

I might try a smaller block !?!

Yeah I got back from my long ride at around 8:45. Checked my Strava feed and it’s gone off. So many long rides today.

Quite a few TTers going long today and a couple of others doing over 300km!!

Long one for me, too. A few friends wanted to do a long ride and catch up, starting at sun rise :flushed: (They’d done the chase the sun ride last year and wanted to start super early again). I plotted a route down to Bognor from SW London and we were there by 8:30am. Lovely route down. Next leg to Brighton was pretty grim; best bit was an unexpected off-road excursion through flax fields that Garmin connect had as a cycle path. Not a gravel bike to be seen! :grinning: Last leg home was borrowed from @Adam and it was a beauty! Lovely quiet, shady lanes, the whole way. 137miles all in. First century since IMCH last year. Ate. So. Much.

BTW, it’s not a turd, but a vegan chilli hot dog. Tasted a lot better than it looked.

So cycling does cross over to running, it’s official!!

58.7km
6hrs 34 mins
6.43/km avg pace
1,688m elevation (TP claims it’s 2,300 but i’m not so sure - i think it’s more like 1800 as i did a bit more than most of my mates and theirs came out at about 1700)

How i did that, and kept up with the quick guys of our group who’ve been training really well over lockdown i have no idea! I’ve not run over 40km in a week since w/c March 16th and my last 12 weeks i have averaged 13km per week of running!

It was a beautiful evening, really sunny and quite warm. Due to the nature of the course though, this meant i had to ration 1l of High 5 zero over the first 4.5 hours. Stopped at a tap in Sidmouth, necked 500ml and filled the two bottles up again. That had to last me the next 2 hours … clue - it did not!

My legs are going to be in bits tomorrow, and i think it’ll be as much dehydration’s fault as a lack of running conditioning. Only ate 3 x naked bars, 1 x chicken wrap and 2 x trek protein flapjacks. Not actually that hungry now, but i’m going to be ravenous tomorrow!

Very nice mate. I hope your theory is right, although I’ve usually found it works better the other way.

I’m with gb on this. No transference from running to the bike. Lots from the bike to the run, at least for slower steady state stuff. But I imagine it is all somewhat individual based on relative strengths. I have no cycling or swimming background. Any time off either of those and my body just seems to forget how to do them

Careful with how slippery it is out there folks… I’m just in from taking my car for its every 2-3 weeks maintenance run, and felt the damp roads straight away; the Traction Control light flashing at even a hint of spirited acceleration. I also saw definitely one, possibly two, people on scooters who had decked it (one was limping into the junction to pick up broken bits of plastic, one was a guy on his phone next to a slightly battered looking machine)

After a friend smashed his femur into five pieces (or maybe four… more than is recommended anyway) on an innocuous looking fall on a damp, slippery, bit of road I’m a bit paranoid about riding in these conditions. Might check out this Zwift thing and go for a run.

It may depend on the terrain you run on. I find that a weekly long run on the hills transfers very well to strengthening my cycling.

Yeah I think it’s an individual thing to be honest.

For me, it’s probably more to do with my back and getting used to the pounding of running again. I feel like if I’m running regularly then cycling seems easy but if I ride exclusively and don’t run, I start to feel like everything stiff and ‘rusty’.

Pot Noodle. What could possibly go wrong…

Nothing apparently

Did you eat a lot of solid food on that run? I was quite surprised. although that was a steady pace for you?

Pace was quite hot for me in my current condition over that terrain. 5.50/km at the end felt like 3.30!

2 naked bars, 2 trek flapjacks and a coop chicken wrap. So not many calories actually. It was the lack of fluids that made it really tough.
