you too mate
Not really training but pretty hardcore in anyoneās book!
Another abject disaster. 6km tester run, walking after 5km with this issue around my left achillies. In fact, I donāt think it is achillies, it seems to be at the bottom of the calf, where the muscle goes into a āpointā.
Really pissed off, done all the things the physio said, loads of S&C (which was to address an entirely different issue in my hip).
Arc 50 in 9wks, canāt see it happening.
Sorry to hear this FP. This really sucks!
Did you ever talk to your physio about physio tape?
I donāt think youāre going to get this resolved until you get a proper medical assessment done with an MRI.
Mrs MC struggled for ages with a recurrent achilles issue that wouldnāt ever quite go away, and despite regularly seemingly sorting itself after methodically following physio advice plus protracted rest, would just take one short run and it was back.
Eventually, we paid for a private podiatrist, who after a very short examination and taking one look at her gait, referred her for an MRI with a consultant, who scanned her and immediately diagnosed an issue (thickened tendon) that no amount of physio would have fixed, and put her on the waiting list for surgery to āscrape itā and free it up, as well as to ease a shortened calf, which was probably root cause).
Weāre still waiting for the surgery, but thatās another issue!
(PS - not physios fault at all⦠she was excellent, and was the one to suggest a podiatrist, and indeed even recommended one)
The frustrating this is that the achillies is new, Iāve never ever had any issue with it before. Iām convinced itās the S&C work. (and probably me doing it wrong).
As for your other suggestion, yes, the physio has said that he thinks the hip is bursa but was more worried about my right knee and did say that it will become apparent whether a referral to a specialist will be needed. Iām due for him to visit either this week or next (I forget).
Itās just frustrating when you try and do the right thing and make it worse. I was better off before.
@Annas I did forget last time but will write a note to bring it up with him next time.
Was this all private? Can I ask at what cost? Iāve seen no end of people about my achilles, MRIs been mentioned but no-ones ever referred me - just keep getting treatment ![]()
Forgot to mention, Iāve got Ā£3k in dental work to cope with over the next few mths. uggh
The podiatrist was private (about £80 per visit), but she referred Mrs MC to an NHS consultant (via our GP)⦠it took about 3 months!
The process was a formal written request to our GP asking him to refer Mrs MC to a named consultant (I think she also discussed with the consultant on Mrs MCās behalf)ā¦.we then had to chase the GP to get the referral done.
In true NHS style, she also had to visit the consultant who had a letter in his hand, ccād to Mrs MC to say she needed a scan, who then sat her down, looked her in the eye and said āyou need a scanā, and iāll arrange that for you. Thanks for coming.
That took several more weeks to arrange, followed by another few weeks waiting for a consultation to say we have the results, and weāll get back to you once weāve agreed treatment options.
Then another few weeks before she got a letter saying weāll contact you in a few weeks to discuss options
Then finally one day when arriving home from work, a letter saying, weāve booked you a review with the consultant. Its tomorrow at 9am, and if you canāt make it, youāre evil and wasting NHS resource and weāll have to reschedule for months in the future.
Consultant tells her she needs an operation, but sadly canāt even hint when itāll be. Or where.
The NHS⦠our crowning glory of magnificent inefficiencyā¦but, god weād be lost without it!
take a look at the prices on this site. The Horder Centre in Sussex specialises in musculoskeletal and orthopaedics so might be worth a thought - I used them to pay for a meniscectomy on my left knee which was crippling me and I couldnāt be arsed to wait around for NHS treatment (Iād had the MRI on the NHS however so only paid for the knee op)
Oh I forgot the letter with a date for the first consultation, with a subsequent letter the next day, saying it had been cancelled due to a massive backlog, and rearranged for the next available date, 3 days earlier than the original oneā¦.
Currently weighing up the benefits of a 6km jog
Versus
Being warm, not having to get naked to change, then again to shower and change etc.
Hmm.
Itās a hard afternoon

Yeah i bailed on my lunch run and had 2 x lunches instead. Contemplating a rare opportunity for a post work run as the sproglets are going with their mum to the dentist, so thereās probs an hour of light for me ⦠if i want it!!!
Currently in my dressing gown (kept it on for the call with my Managing Director
) with a hot water bottle under my feet and sat next to a radiator.
Whilst watching the snow melt.
Gets dark about 4pm now, doesnāt it?
Hour on the rollers in the garage this morning. Fleece lined tights, beanie, thermal top, tech top, puffa jacket. Couple of 1 minute bits at 400w, rest chilling out. Literally. None of that kit came off until I was inside for about 15 minutes.
Run tonight - 30 mins of not breaking a sweat.
I think thatās half of it for me. Itās not the being out in the cold, itās the stripping off and then putting the clothes on. Cycling and running clothes are always freezing to put on!
Itās the getting changed four times which is pissing me off
Itās too cold to get naked three times in the next six hours.
Iāve invented a new physiological phenomenon, itās called Seasonal Lamination Decoupling, where your power drops and your heart rate rises at the same time due to taking your jumper off mid interval after 10mins on the turbo in the shed.

Yeah think Iāve entered the Seasonal Lamination Onset Window, but prefer to use the acronym.
