Training - What Training?!

‘Enjoy the good times…’ could be the motto for the last 2 years, tell me it was there before March 2020!

Out of interest, what do you teach? Is the PE extra curricular or is that your subject?

Getting a Border Collie has absolutely rejuvenated my waning love for running. It’s like being strapped to the back of The Millennium Falcon. 12 Parsecs is nothing😂

Quality couple of hours out on the deserted, foggy Surrey lanes. Felt like leaving in the middle of the night just before 7 though, was pitch black.

If it wasn’t for a puncture towards the end of the ride we wouldn’t have stopped once!

I think that’ll be route for the TT bike once the sun comes back out

Really nice weekend here. The gang all back from uni & it seems I have somehow trained my family to exercise me, like some sort of dog.

It didn’t start amazingly, I came back from work at 7pm on Friday and sank 3 beers, the first two were fine but the third was a mistake because it had a picture of an evil cat on it and was 8.5% abv.

So on Saturday morning I was feeling a little less than 100% but Mrs FT kindly frogmarched me on an 8am jog round town at her default pace which is 6m30 per km.

After a couple of coffees I felt better and went on Zwift. I have raced something stupid like 30 times in the last 6 weeks and either my pedals are on the wonk or I’m getting stronger, because the numbers are getting better despite Father Time’s best efforts. This was a volcano climb race, 30 minutes of riding but all for 5 minutes of action up the volcano. I gave it some Welly but still finished way down the list. Training peaks however came up with a new FTP, 286W, that’s the third time this week. So that’s good, if somewhat pointless in December.

Junior #3 then immediately wanted to go on a MTB ride so chucked on some warm layers and off we went for an hour of mud. He particularly likes riding down flights of stairs and between trees when the gap is so narrow that concussion or fractures are pretty much guaranteed. But we survived.

Came home and hosed down the bikes, then Mrs FT wanted to go for a walk to the local view point to see the sunset (it was after 3pm by this time). Fine that was nice. But when we got back junior #1 was lacing up his shoes and strapping on his head torch to go for a trail run. Do you want to come Dad? Well frankly the answer was no, but I have long had a rule always to say yes in these situations. We went off road behind the castle, the moon was stunning and we saw deer grazing. Really glad I manned up and did it.

That was Saturday. Today, wife again was champing at the bit for an early morning run. Then I managed to get a Zwift in, Crit city this time. 6th from last A, will take that. Then junior #2 had booked a swim for us both, just 1500m but nice to get in the water.

Knacked now, but reflecting his lucky I am that the kids all seem to enjoy exercise and don’t seem embarrassed to drag the old man along, and also that the body seems still to be willing- just about.

Slightly lame week for me. 3 full rest days, been pretty frazzled TBH and was still suffering yesterday.

But managed 90k on the Wattbike\Zwift & 2 runs for 20k, including the parkrun yesterday.

2 full weeks off work so will hopefully get some R&R and decent training in.

Been a bit quiet lately. I don’t know, I seem to be plodding along with this 100/100 challenge and can’t think of anything interesting to say. I didn’t think I would find running 30mins almost everyday so mentally difficult. I miss long runs, which I’m not doing because I’m trying to be sensible and not get injured.

Last Monday I got my booster and a few days later started having heart palpitations, doc did an ECG and everything was normal, but she told me to take it easy. So, I took the weekend off. Feel a bit better today so I went for a 45mins run at 9 and a 30mins at 11, trying to make up the missed runs. Feel ok, my heart doesn’t feel worse for running and I feel really good, so I’m going to just do my sport. My kid said he’d come out with me this afternoon, so maybe I’ll even get in a 3rd run today.

Well done Anna. Been reading your 60/60 thread on ST, you kept that thing alive and really got some well deserved thanks for that :+1:

Thanks FP, I was so happy (had a little teenage fan girl moment!!) when Rait came and thanked me too. His answers to the questions are brilliant. Much better than any article that could have been written. Ordered the Jason Koop’s book today. I wanted to order the book in summer, but it wasn’t available and I’ve been waiting for the new edition to come out for a few months now - In fact, I was waiting so long I forgot I actually wanted this book!!!

How are the niggles? are you able to run yet?

Yeah that bit was great, he’s very open. Not such good news for me, been battling a soleus issue that seems to have come about from the S&C stuff I’m doing to address the hip issue. :slightly_frowning_face:

No running until early Jan at best. I can spin if I want though. I’ve had to withdraw from Arc of Attrition 50

Was a busy Sunday morning and junior park run was on so I didn’t have time for an individual long workout… kept the smelly clothes on and did a few short sets when the opportunity arose.

That really sucks. At least you can still spin, but it’s not the same. On a good note, the year I ran my best was when I spent the whole winter on the turbo trying to improve my cycling strength - so you never know, maybe you’ll come back fitter and faster. Hope it gets better soon, so you can atleast do a race in late 2022

I managed an hour at the lower end of sweetspot on Zwift today (although with a fortnight of pretty much no exercise, that may well be mid/upper!). Although i’m probs a couple of kgs over my zwift weight at the mo.

Jumped onto a perfect group ride, that helped to pass the time by concentrating on keeping in the group. I’ve found that this is much more stimulating for me rather than what’s going on in and around a route in terms of scenery and stuff.

60 mins @ about 3.3 w/kg

Chest seemed to cope with the steady state alright. Bit rubbish when i first came back into the warm house, but i think i’m improving :crossed_fingers: Not going to risk it with any races or high Z4/5 type efforts for the next week at least though.
