Training - What Training?!

Over 750m it was 2:37/100 freestyle (first time I’ve done it and I definitely had plenty in the tank at the end), and I can do a 2:12/100 breastroke.

My 750m PB is a 2:07/100 average which was probably 70% breast/30% freestyle.

I can get under 2:00/100 on both if it’s a just a standalone 100m set.

Thanks for the advice. Good point about the legs and knees. I’ll keep plugging away. Now I’ve got it into my head I can actually do 750m free continuous without my arms falling off, then hopefully combined with the right drills and keeping working on core, shoulders etc… that time will come down over next few months. I’m planning on doing intervals for my next few sessions then try the 750 again at the end of the month.

I’d like to do a local aquathlon in March and would really prefer not to do much, if any, BS if nothing else than out of courtesy to the people who will be overtaking me :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

definitely keep at it, slow down the stroke and work on body position and technique, start doing 25’s and trying to get that time down, add some 50’s also. think about being as flat and straight as possible, keep head still, work on an efficient flutter kick. It will come. If you can get to a coached session it will help no end

I have a question if you wouldn’t mind. What sort of sets would you recommend for building endurance or staving off form drop?

25s I can reasonably comfortably get in around 17-18s. 100s around 120s but can’t hold that for too many. Providing I can take brief rests in between 100s I could hold 135/140 no problem. Strokes per length is approx 20-21.

But as soon as I try and do longer sets the wheels just come off and I lose form. I feel myself fighting the water. IM swim times vary best 1:12, worst 1:30.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread. It just came to mind when reading your reply.

Its hard to say too much without watching you swim etc. time of year, goal etc. You can work on aerobic conditioning regardless of the length of each rep, so 100 x 25’s off 5seconds can work really well as can 50 x 50’s off 10, or 24 x 100’s off 10-20secs etc. You need to mix it up.

If my goal was say a 1500 in 20minutes (easy maths) I would have a session or two each week targeting that pace. That’s 1:20 per 100 so I may start by looking at getting a 400 in sub 5:20 at 7/10 effort, which would be 16x25 holding 20 seconds off 30, then when done off 25 then when that was comfortable 8 * 50 holding 40 off 50, then 45, then 4 *100 holding 1:20 off 1:30, etc and build to it. once I had the 400 nailed you then stretch it out further.

Typically the maximum length of rep in sessions would be 200s. but maybe 300’s if technique is OK, sometimes I’d add a long continuous swim very easy focusing on relaxing. There really is no single way, but good form trumps longer distances always. If you want to do 4*400 and you get to 250m and your 18sec length is now 22, stop, rest and then go again.

Thanks, that’s helps a lot. Interesting what you say about aerobic conditioning too. I’ll try putting that into practice and see how I get on.

Yes @Hammerer thanks that’s a really helpful way of setting it out and I can see how I could adapt that for my current ability. Breaking it down into smaller chunks, of quicker goals for shorter lengths but repeated also feels psychologically more achievable to me.

Snow day here so did some stretching and bodyweight exercises over lunch. Will do something proper tomorrow to earn a Chinese.

Anyway to be sure it’s not taking wrist data?

Pretty much a rest day for me, was ready for one I think. Had a massage that got pretty painful, then a few token effort upper body weights.

Fantastic! Gave the heel a go today. 45 minute run, no issues. Could have happily trotted on for an hour but happy to take it steady.

Watch watching - 20 mins fine, 30 mins fine, 40 mins fine… wow :open_mouth:… took in a few steady inclines. Obviously early days but this is such a relief. The exercises have worked, cycling’s kept me in good condition. I can just enjoy both again into the spring - wahoo! :raised_hands:

Done nothing today and I needed it. We watched Harry Potter this morning, then a mate came over to pick up our garage fridge/freezer. Then I pottered around re-organising the garage and fitted the mudguards back on LO’s bike.

Then just lounged around looking at moto accessories.

Stair training 🪜
Basement (where all the tools and paint live) up to the 2nd floor and back to first and up to second, back to basement, numerous times

Did my 20 minute physio exercises.
Ankle is wrecked now :sob:

My watch is telling me I’ve done 328 minutes of activity at an intensity greater than a brisk walk today.

So I’ll take that

Trail run and new shoes day

Ran just after the really heavy rain finished so it was very muddy in the woods, and despite all the online reviews of the Terra Kiger 7 to the contrary, my grip was fine. There’s a level of mud where nothing can grip, but I stayed upright.’c unlike last week where a mere muddy puddle had me ass over tit in road shoes.

It’s the rubber sole on tarmac/rocks, not mud.

The rubber compound is atrocious.

I nearly went arse over tit on a wet grid in my Juniper Trail.
The Wildhorse were the same.

I’ve got Kerra Tiger for muddy XC, but I wouldn’t wear them for running up Alderley woods, too much wet sandstone.

Stick to the Salomon for that :+1:t3:

Yeah, for real offroad stuff.

But like a lot of people buying trail shoes I don’t have any technical trail races or mountains nearby. Just suburban woodland trot. I’ll see how they are when the snows come, that’s where my old Speedcross really impressed me.

Other thing to note is that they are cushioned enough that the run to the woods on wet pavement is comfortable, where some “proper” trail shoes are jarring like like clogs.
