Triathlons GOAT

Any thoughts about LCB’s performance yesterday? Does this qualify her for a place on the female leaderboard yet? 70.3 WC, IM WC and a fistful of 2nd places.

Depends how big your leaderboard is.
Doesn’t yet get her in the conversation for 1st in my view, which is probably harsh considering the field she beat. But needs a few more big wins in my eyes.

Sounds like she’s going to focus on PTO next year

I’m struggling to think of another wire-to-wire win in Kona.
Dave Scott in 1980?!

Certainly one of the greatest wins in Kona history.

what if there were 5 places on the leaderboard?

No. She’s still behind Ryf, Wellington, Newbury-Fraser
and maybe even Badmann. And that’s just long course, think you have to include Duffy and Spirig just for their range.

The gun to tape thing is interesting. Yes it’s impressive, but she isn’t realistically going to win any other way. It’s like saying Paula Radcliffe was great because she won all her races by front running, while in reality if she didn’t she got outsprinted.

Because she’s a swim-biker.
Über swimmer, very good cyclist, her running isn’t great (for a Pro!)

So yes. Saying she led gun to tape isn’t saying much :person_shrugging:t3:

yep…

Yep, but i think it is harder to be dominant in 3 disciplines…

That said, i don’t think she had enough competition yesterday. They played into her hands a little…

But it is a fantastic performance and worthy of moving up the board…but needs to be dominant across seasons to achieve top 5

She’s not bad. Looks like she had the 4th fastest run. Her problem is the uber runners can be 10 minutes faster and it only needs 1 of them to have a good day from the pack of cyclists behind. This time she got a big enough lead and the pack was a bit more fragmented, so maybe they had to work a bit harder.

LCB was out on her own all day. Not a single athlete near her. Compare that to every other pro female victory in a mixed field…

Erin Baker, Smyers?

I think LCB has cracked the top 10 perhaps; a couple more Konas would see her top 5 arguably. Plenty of time at 30.

They have to work harder than previous generations in the female only fields.

Probably not even into the top 5 of those I know from the last ~decade, let alone those before me.

Ryf, Chrissie, Duffy, Carfrae, ± Jorgensen/Spirig/LCB

Here’s the women’s Kona leaderboard, if you use an (entirely arbitrary) weighting of 10 points for a gold, 5 for silver and 2 for bronze. Source = IM Kona Wikipedia page.

  1. PNF, 79 points
  2. Natascha, 70 points
  3. Ryf, 55
  4. Rinnie, 45
  5. Chrissie, 40
  6. Lori Bowden, 37
  7. Erin Baker, 35
  8. S Puntous, 35 (actually equal 7th but the formatting goes weird)
  9. LCB, 30
  10. Haug, 21

Lori Bowden was a suprise for me. Also, honourable mention for Fernanda Keller, bronze 6 times between 1994 and 2000.

Just been looking at times from Chrissie and beyond …

What I’d forgotten about was CW outside of Kona :exploding_head:

Top 10s OVERALL here there and everywhere - not in Mickey Mouse races either; Roth and IM Aus :scream:

No ITU pedigree, though, plus :zipper_mouth_face:

Ironman conceived to decide who is the fittest on the planet. Take your short chutes elsewhere buddy!

Exactly right and that has Baker moving right up that field!

I think LCB could dominate for the next 2-3 years if she remains uninjured. Potentially she could become GOAT, but still some way off

The female ‘list’ is more difficult, as no-one has really transcended all distances like the top men.

Allen won Nice, ITU Worlds & Kona in a single season (89) for example.
