The grav bug has bitten you hard!
Did it in '17. Thought I’d trained hard for it, found it brutal but great.
The grav bug has bitten you hard!
I’ve ummed and ahhed about buying one for a couple of years, now - I’ve taken the Ribble with 28mm tyres on some cobbles and mild off road, I did the “Hell of the North” Pennine Bridleway ride on my BMC with 28mm slicks, too! ha ha ha
Finally bit the bullet and bought one - now just doing everything I have seen my cycle club do ![]()
A few from the club are doing the Reiver, too, so hopefully a relaxed day out!
(My brother only lives about 15 miles down the road, so no Enterprise for me!)
WTB tyres are complete biatches to deal with. I took them off and put Schwalbe G series on for gravel rides
I was thinking about going tubeless on my Canyon next spring. This massive thread is very much making me change my mind! There’s no way old cack hands here would be able to manage it.
Yep - I’ve been thinking about it as we have so many shitty surfaces here and a lot of my punctures are from impact / snakebite which (theoretically) should be significantly reduced with tubeless.
I think I’ll get 28s onto my Canyon now that I’m using Hunt wide rims as the 25s don’t bulge at all. I never get punctures on my winter bike riding 28s so I think this is a much simpler and more reliable way of minimising punctures on the summer bike if it works
Right. Got a pair of these to keep me off the MTB routes and on proper gravel ![]()

Hardwearing and robust gravel tyre for compact and rocky terrain
If I can’t get them on, bike shop said they’ll do it for me ![]()

Went on FIRST TRY with no messing about or esoteric techniques

Tan wall all DAY!
That Dirty Reiner looks ace. Shame I’ve already entered four local events that weekend ![]()
What did I tell you!
My father-in-law MTBs and also hates WTB tyres.
It’s the first thing he said when I sent him a photo of my new bike “take those crap tyres off and it’ll be alright” ![]()

So, moral of the story?
Tubeless tyres are actually a piece of pie to setup, you just need the right tyre ![]()

I’ve got 30mm WTB Horizons for winter riding & soft-roading, luv 'em.
I never managed to get out today, but the tyres are still inflated and feel like 40-45psi ![]()

Kit is all out and ready to embrace the cobbles tomorrow ![]()

So. What’s better for a potential long, long ride. Tubes with a few spares in the saddle bag? Or is this where tubeless will really come into its own?
The roads here are shite. So, as noted earlier in this thread, I think I want to love to tubeless on the roadie. Once the days get a bit longer I’ll start riding outside. Which gives me a month or two to sort this out.
There’s tonnes of stuff online, which makes it almost more confusing. From experienced perspectives, what kit are y’all suggesting?
Tyres, valve cores, sealant, butt plug thingies? Anything else.
My rims are tubeless ready. Assume I would just need to inspect the tape to make sure it’s not been compromised over the last couple of years.
Anything I’m missing?
Give me an hour or so and I’ll show you ![]()
No rush at all. But any brands or anything to look out for (tyres and goo etc). ![]()
My view is that tubless is great for winter riding on minimum 28mm tyres.
In my experience the tyre pressure is too high for 25mm tyres so go with latex tubes for your fsst summer wheels.
I’ll be running 28s on them. Not worried about speed, per se. Want something reliable and don’t want to be messing about changing tubes all the time if I hit another speight of punctures. I got a bit scarred last spring with a whole bunch in a row. ![]()
But food for thought. Ta
28mm GP5000’s roll quite nice and good on rough roads. Tubeless would definately be my choice on 28mm & what I’m running now.
Only problem is those tyres are like hens teeth right now
I got some GP5000s off of Sigma Sport last week in 30mm. 10% off with WELCOMEBACK10. So £90 a pair. They were out of stock of 28mm, like everywhere else in the UK…
I’m using Muc-Off for my valves/sealant & Tesa tape.
(The tape width you require - if you require - will depend on the inner diameter of your wheel & valve length on your wheel depth…obv.)
All good
