Virtual Zwift Rides

Managed an hour at 6am today. Easy effort except for nailing the Zwift climb and the Italian sprint.

Okay, so laptop is usually otherwise engaged at the moment, so rather than do Zwift on my phone, which is manageable but a bit pants, I thought maybe I could get a Tablet with 4G capability (use my Unlimited mobile SIM). A tablet will boot much faster than PC, and I don’t have to worry about setting-up a new WiFi connection in the garage. @stenard may also find this useful?

So any Tablet suggestions, new or reconditioned? Android please.

One thing Zwift on android is beta and not as good as iOS. Problems due to the vast number of different platforms and incarnations of android, some are much better than others.

@stenard, you should see the Join Ride button appear in the bottom left of the screen about 10mins before the race starts. If you do not see it, then have a look in the companion app and join from there.

The companion app needs to be on the same network as your computer which has Zwift on.

You should see the races that you are entered into in the companion app. If you don’t see it, go to events in Companion and join event from there

This works really well, much better than joining directly on Zwift

Hi Matt. Yep, aware of how it “should” work from the couple of races I had done. But it just seems hit and miss if that “join now” button actually shows. It seems absurd to me you can’t just join the game direct at a start line and then warm up there to be sure you are in.

I had entered events on the companion. The bit you mention about “join from there” on the companion app isn’t right. It’s not like there’s a join now button there if you don’t have it on the main game. I only got the companion app popup when I finally got the main game to work.

I think my issue yesterday was that it just got in a spiral of confusion as each event I “missed” was then still ongoing and it it wouldn’t then let me into a different one afterwards. It was only after quitting the game entirely, restarting everything and having a clear hour where all events I’d tried to enter over the preceding hour had finished, that it all seemed to sort itself out.

On the companion app, I also realised my laptop had switched the the 5Ghz version of my broadband, whilst my phone had not (the bb operates auto switching depending on signal strength), so I think that was also causing problems.

I always join from the App, not the Companion; for the very reason you state; the potential disconnect.

But how much would a 4G iPad set me back?

I did look at putting an older router as a ‘slave’ in the Garage; but the instructions for that were ‘TLDR’ and I gave up on that idea will all the configuring.

Don’t know if this helps but a list of compatable devices…

far too much  seriously about 450 quid for the 32GB 7th gen version so not very cheap! then again a decent android is pretty similar in price

Some good honest racing in the race I did yesterday; those C Cats

So an SSD laptop and a 4g dongle would be cheaper and better…

I could even stick a 3G internal card for the X230 I linked above in the post to Jorgan)

6.14w/kg for 38 mins FFS. They would be DQ’ed on Zwiftpower

I’ve noticed a lot of new people racing on Zwift with very iffy w/kg, strangely enough, they don’t appear to have registered in Zwiftpower… maybe because they try to keep cheating cockwombles out

Which post was that Jim? (with the SSD link)

Is 2GB RAM enough for a dedicated Zwift machine, or is 4 better? The SSD is preferable too isn’t it for boot times.

It runs fine on a 2gig SSD X230, it’s really not very processor intensive at all, the graphics would probably be better on something with a real graphics card, but that depends just how good an experience you want with the graphics, but it’s more than strong enough. As you saw in the pain cave thread, that’s what Otter uses (and what she uses for Fortnite / Minecraft etc. too.)

You have to scroll down a bit to find the details.

Looking at the specs of the 2012 HP Pavilion DV06 I current use, they are:

Intel Core i5 (2nd Gen) 2430M / 2.4 GHz
6GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 3000 (1696mb)

Still going after 8yrs abuse

Dont bother today. Worst April Fool yet

It would do my nut I’m to think about the cheating that clearly goes on.

I treat it as the ‘land of make believe’ and a bit of fun.

Although I know that ‘Fat Bob’ from my club would rinse me on zwift and might give it the big one on Strava, later in the year when it’s out on the road - the truth will out - that’s why TTS are the race of truth.
