Virtual Zwift Rides

They manage all this moaning whilst racing the top half of Box Hill…that sounds more suspect to me; which will be one of my retorts next time

I remember when I had a turbo like that… I had a 410-415 watt ftp. The first and second test I did… those were the days…

Zwift 2013 I think.

I bought that trainer in 2007. I have an Elite fan trainer from the mid 90s in the garage too; much better nick as not used it for nearly 30 years and my parents wanted rid of it!

Looks well loved & they don’t make em like that any more.

How do you measure/ transmit power with that? Do you have a separate PM? I had a Tacx flow back in the days before Zwift but can’t remember if there would have been a way of sharing the power with Zwift

Riding a dumb trainer on Zwift is a very different experience to a smart trainer

You’re going to tell me electronic shifting is different too right? …and tubeless

Is it better? Tbh I find it quite difficult on a dumb trainer with power. On Monday I did an event and some of them were clearly steering, as there was a little group off to one side; made it all a bit odd and incohesive. But tbh I CBA to invest too much into Zwift, I just do it for a bit of fun and some intensity in my rides.

YES!
I didnt enjoy zwift at all until I switched to smart trainer. Complete different level of engagement.
Virtual shifting and other stuff is an improvement… but nothing is as game changing as a smart trainer imo.

I’m still in the 2000s tbh :upside_down_face: Great times.

(apart from adopting wide tyres & disc brakes)

Yeah, I used Zwift on an old-style Wattbike at the gym for about 7 months last year and it’s a very different experience.

The smart trainer is a much more realistic and immersive experience. With the dumb trainer I was tending to ride at a pretty steady power output regardless of the Zwift terrain.

Seconded. Big difference moving from Tacx Flow to Quatermaster @mw22’s Saris H3. Much more addictive… whether this is a good thing or not, I don’t know

I’m persisting with the Wattbike, don’t race particularly seriously and it’s basically a time trial with sprints as I don’t get any respite on descents really.

But a reasonable turbo is quite cheap these days.

I was going to say that, you can pickup a pretty decent smart trainer these days for not bonkers money and it’s well worth it over a wheel on jobby.

But then I’d have to replace my ethernet powerline adapter  Currently (since the last one broke) running a long cable into the house via the garage back door.

I know. I know.

My concern is that a decent indoor set-up and getting a proper gravel bike would make me weapons grade, and I’d get drawn into competing again

Just picked up a Zwift cog for my Tacx Neo2 since they are now compatible. Makes it easier running 11 and 12 speed on the turbo as there is no cassette to swap out. Being BLE I can still Zwift as I warm up at the TTs

Jorgan probably has no idea what you’re going on about with his Stone Age turbo :joy:

I presume these are FE-C trainers that you’re using to get the ‘premium experience’?

There are a couple of Diretos on FB for well under 200; are they passable?

As Mark Twain famously said:

Get a smart trainer. You will not regret it, if you live
