That’s why I pick Sat
Although when I tried this last time from midnight to midnight, the 4th tiny race was up and down the Grade. I skipped those ![]()
Not had many of these in the last few years; chasing the wifes time up a portal. Still didn’t beat her ![]()
Can you set up someone else’s time for the shadow rider, or set your own target time. Or am I imagining a feature that doesn’t exist?
Don’t think so - Holo replay does your PB or prev effort. Not even sure if they work in the portals (I turn them off as they annoy me when I fall behind).
Portal like the alp does have the regular splits - tho I had my sauce set up to give me a constant average as I was chasing 20 min power target.
I had checked strava times to give me an indication - always find that helpful.
Yes I think it’ll show your recent PB and last lap/segment time eg multi climbs. Also a rider from the leaderboard, usually fastest. Would be good if you could pick a particular person.
Had a go on the tiny series today as I didn’t fancy going outside, bonus was that it let me race Cat C as well ![]()
First race was Glasgow so just cruised round for a warmup
Second race was 3 laps of the bell loop, kept near the front and sprinted hard at the end to finish third!
Third race was 3 laps of the dolphin, did enough to stay near the front and wasn’t going to push that hard but ended up getting dragged along and finished fifth
Fourth race was in Neokyo, went a bit harder than planned in race 3 but knew most others would be tired as well, it picked up with a K to go and I used the aero with about 500, then got dragged along with a big push and somehow went over the line in first!
Picked up a few points in three of the races but I suspect I’ll be in Cat B next time. Although in race 2 we’d have won Cat B from what I can see🤷♂️
Still as painful as I remember them!
Another go on the tiny series today and it still let me in C ![]()
First race was a standard easy warmup, second race I was near the front and had a go at the sprint, someone was well in front but I managed third somehow. Got a few more points for this.
Cocked the third race up, was near the front on the drag with 1K to go but didn’t see the attack, by the time I played my P/U and realised they were well ahead so didn’t bother chasing to save it for race 4.
Internet had some kind of meltdown after that and dropped my connection when I went to join race 4
, had to restart the WIFI plug in the garage so missed the start and CBA to do anything else!
Anyone doing the ZRL series this season? Tonight’s race was a bit savage, not sure why they’ve got a few real long races this season, seems a bit excessive to be racing for over an hour ![]()
Yup.
Agree. The odd long one is fine, every week is too much. I nearly lost the will to live on the 4th climb.
Annoyingly then lost my wheel over the top.
75 in our pen and our lowest scorer was p15. So great team result for us.
Next week is no better ![]()
Yeah I dropped the wheel over the final climb, was in no mans land after that so just rolled in for 3rd which was one of my best ZRL finishes.
Struggle to get a good sleep after a hard ZRL in the evening.
So this weekend ticked off my first half everest (just 24 halfs, 10 full, 1*10k and a double behind the wife
).
I don’t like the Alp - feels too long and my legs seize up with the length of the descent. So opted for the grade with 300m climb per lap. Wasn’t bothered about official result, so trainer difficulty wasn’t whacked up to 100%.
Felt like I paced it well, though did start chasing the clock on the final few reps when a sub 5 hour was on the cards (think I clocked 4:58).
I did cramp getting off and had been struggling with how much I’d been sweating. Garage was surprisingly warm for December. Next biggest issue was neck pain, not something I normally struggle with on trainer, tho as I’d really been trying to cap the power - I stayed seated for almost all of it.
I finished my 15th rep (ironically got a route PB). So a full would require 14 more ![]()
Clearly need to knock the power back a bit
Don’t know how feasible that is. @Daz any thoughts? Did you have a break mid way through yours?
No point asking the wife, she has no concept of mere mortals, or fatigue or the pain I’d likely endure.
Again not bothered by official rules of 100% TD (tho rumour is that might be pulled soon).
Was this part of the build up to the full on the 29th?
How much difference does TD really make? Low TD means you don’t have to change gear very much for changing elevation, but on a constant ramp like the grade I would imagine you just settle in and pedal in a lower gear?
I have ridden with those guys - by chance - on some other sessions and events and I do like them (lots of banter). Tho its not an ideal date for me. Tho also haven’t completely ruled it out.
To me it makes loads of difference. The first time I joined them I didnt realise they set the event to 100%. Yesterday my virtual gearing was all in the range 8-10 (including the flat section in the middle).
When I did it in the event, firstly I had to drop to small ring on the bike and I was right down the lower end of available gears. That was without having any real fatigue either.
More so, when I hit that flat section (or in the event we had to do the loop top and bottom as well) I was needing to shift 6 or 7 gears just to get any resistance.
Its as much annoying, as it is extra mental thought and with the worry of running out of gears.
I think Daz swapped his cassette before his ride.
I just checked the wifes intro to everesting.
Friday late March - 5:05 half
Sun early April (9 days later!!) - 9:48 full
Theres me thinking 3+ weeks and adding an hour+ to my time isn’t enough. She’s so annoying.
Why TF did they add that flat section anyway, it’s super annoying
Congrats Mike! Hard enough doing a half! Was the wife helping out? You know she helped me with my attempt. Imagine a friend just turning up to do a half Everest to help out lol
If they are allowing any TD then that can really help. I just couldn’t reach a low enough gear with the cassette I was using. Andy Nichols sent some kind of adaptor down that I could attach to my cassette I think. If you can go 30-50% then solves that problem.
As for breaks. I was just watching mine back (https://youtu.be/FReqzfQ_ksc?si=GfANeYx4w5SDtImG) and think I just had the 8min downhills and an extra 20min at the bottom (to make 30min). I must have had a small meal there and a rest. Got to get the balance right though. If you have a large meal then the blood will be moving away from the muscles for the next ascent, and stiffen up, which will make it harder. At the same time, you need to keep up the cals. So you’d prob have to keep snacking and hydrating on the way up as well as the way down and have a couple of breaks for a few more cals.
Im not fussed about doing the official event or the Hells500 rules. Avoiding the event means I could u-turn at the banners rather than have the extra 40 secs top and bottom.
Thats an extra half hour of pedalling for no gain!!
The event is open world so they would all be online and they have multiple starting windows as well. So happy to just start on my own whenever I wanted.
No she wasn’t helping - my choice. My “issue” is she never appears to struggle (I mean other than dragging her off the floor for her 17th alp on the Double). I don’t seem to react well when everyone else around me is doing well, I seem to flourish when I find there’s weakness around me - don’t know how messed up that is in my head. But my brain is in overdrive during most activities.
So watching her dance up makes me feel sh1t ![]()
Yes much less opportunity to get a meal in descending the Grade. Timed it at around 3:30.
Just thinking out loud ![]()
Haha I bet it’s a bit disconcerting on these type of things seeing your wife comfortably spinning, chatting, sipping a cup of tea and reading a mag while you’re dying!
I see what you mean about the extra work on those events. How do they turn around at the bottom then? I do like the idea of a mass start event, although would be tempting for a lot of riders to top it early on, getting a bit too excited.
Yeh I think the Grade is too short a (downhill) recovery mate. The Alpe is just about right as you can sit down for a short while, drop HR, get some food and liquid on. But not too long you start to seize up.
Have you got the Aethos upgraded?
The event just uses the Oh hill no route - so you have the loop at the top and the roundabout at the bottom.
I prefer the manual uturn - tho you have to catch it just right at the bottom before it sends you round the roundabout.
There’s multiple events for different timezones, so be plenty of overlap of riders.
Whilst you prob need the 10 min recovery, I do seize up. Im not great after 3 mins let alone 10.
Yeah Aethos is maxed. Tho I did some speed tests and theres barely any difference with the SL8, Tron is only a few seconds slower on the grade as well.
Aha the Grade. Gotcha. I’ve got the AdZ in my head all the time when I think vEveresting lol.
Presume you’ve been using this: https://zwifterbikes.web.app I’ve been having a play with it.
