I did have TOD on sneaking on the podium too
Don’t get me wrong, I love AB and a lot of that is down to his aggressive attitude to racing.
I don’t think I was suggesting he soft pedal for a top 5, just on the balance of probability his best chance of winning in that situation of getting a puncture perhaps wasn’t to blast back up burning matches. Then again I wasn’t there, don’t know how many watts he was having to push and most importantly don’t have 2 golds at home
I do know what you are saying, its going to be a learning curve for him. You can take bigger risks at ITU level and usually have to. Like LIONhell last year because of his poor bike handling in the cross winds he had to chase hard to get on and blew. He probably also should have just stuck to he pre race power caps and conserved.
Meh, this is nothing. Back in the Macca days, there was ‘jostling’ at the awards party between him and the Germans (Faris/Stadler’) in 2006. I guess the Germans like to have some English speaking adversaries to keep them fired-up; not sure Frodo is hot on Wurf either.
It would be funny if AB bumped into Frodo and said "Harry says Hi"
He’d have to bend down and bump him in the hip for full effect.
What’s Dirty Harry up to these days? A KQ for him could spice the swim up
Ha ha. The Slowtwitch goons are really doubling down on this, it’s crazy
21st in Kona with an 8:35 is a pretty solid finish tbh; especially as that was in the days where an 8:0x would easily net you the win!
Agreed, but that’s two years ago now!
Maybe he’s seen the writing on the wall; either that or Mum & Dad have.
I think he’s getting more involved in the Extreme tris. Sure he did Norseman and Celtman this year or last from memory.
Possible problem for Wiltshire now is the changes in qualification for pro’s, rather than amassing points for decent positions you generally need to win a race, or go to one with a few slots and have a very good day with a bigger field.
Jeff
In 2006, at Lava Java, the day after, McCormack was livid and still banging on like a cock about he was the ‘best’ etc. He went up to Stadler and said:
“I will race you, anytime, anyplace, anywhere”
Stadler replied “Yesterday”
That is class. Tbh back in those days, I used to think Stadler was a big wuss, with his fancy hair and his multiple DNFs/meltdowns. In hindsight, I was probably a little wrong and I suspect he’s a top bloke who’s more grounded (and less annoying) than Macca ever will be.
I think the other handbags I referred to, was Faris accusing him of drafting at the awards, and they had to be separated?
Could put this in the rant section too… however, getting pissed off seeing IM fb post of the last finishers in Kona. FFS it is a world championship. In any other race fine, but a WC should celebrate the best of the best, if the finisher is a qualifier in an older age group, then respect to them, however, if the final finisher is someone who bought a ticket on Ebay or legacy finisher…
It annoys me every year when they cut to the last swimmer trying to make the swim cut off - just learn to swim, it’s not that hard!
I always liked Stadler, more than any of the other Germans, probably up there with Sebi for me. The reason I liked Stadler is that he was really the first person to ‘win’ the race on the bike. He never deviated from that strategy and it paid off in the end.
I don’t mind it if it’s one of the “feel good stories” where making the cut genuinely is a challenge (like the one told in Ironwar), but when it’s just a lottery winner, it makes a bit of a mockery of the World Championship aspect.
I was watching magic hour live and I will admit similar thoughts crossed my mind. I thought of looking some of them up, but basically if they’re a bit tubby (like me I hasten to add) there no way they qualified.
Takes a bit off it as it is WC, but still they deserve the same clap I got at Lanza this year I think.
