2021 New Year’s Day 5K PB

I felt my watch vibrate once and thought, wow that km went quick but it was just telling me I’d slowed up by 2secs and I still had 200mtr of that km to go. grr

Huge difference in a week. Hilly or just not a race effort?

17:37 for me tonight. Exactly equal to my pb from end 2019, last time I did one.
Expected better, as I’ve only done a couple of 5k efforts before and thought I was only in medium shape when I set pb after few months off after IMUK. For Context I’ve ran 17:39 in a Triathlon and 17:40 on a hilly 5k during 2019 hence thought maybe low 17.

Reality is I should accept that’s as good as I can do. Could make my excuses (such as slightly dead leg from a fall on ice on Saturday) but think they’d be that, excuses, rather than any meaningful difference.
Well done to all. Looking forward to supporting the progress thread, definitely spurred me on having this!

I also definitely wasn’t ‘ticking along at 4:10 pace afterwards’ @gingerbongo style :skull_and_crossbones::wink:

It’s weird isn’t it. My post surgery 5km PB was 20.17, 3yrs ago as part of a duathlon! Why haven’t I run a quicker stand alone?

Great running. Remember you’re just out playing on your own. Put a number on the front and have someone to chase /be chased by and it’ll make the world of difference.

:+1:t4:

Thanks. I did it as 2 laps round the hospital and considering checking myself in as a patient the second time round, but on reflection after I don’t think I truly managed to get max effort out myself. On an FTP test I reckon I go to my limit, but agree race would have spurred me on today

That’s part of conditioning though I find, learning to access higher efforts physically and mentally. Lots of research that pain tolerance increases with fitness, and decreases in off-season.

Clearly we need to do harder warm ups! :joy:

Will the cold have had an impact? Although you handled it fairly well at Helvellyn, but when it gets really cold I struggle, although I’m not a fan of the cold I’d say my best times have generally been when it’s between 10-15c.

I find it does. It plays havoc with my chest, but that’s cos I’ve got asthma. Even now my chest is tight and not really very happy.

I don’t mind the cold generally, but I am limited at vo2 max work by it, in my experience. Doesn’t seem to effect me at steady to slow pace though.

For me temperature swings cause more problems when it can change 10c or more in a day or two, particularly if there’s a windchill.

Did he shorten one leg slightly?

If so I’d put it down as virtual hoping, that’s a new Tri talk World record right there.

haha good point. I do run in circles these days.

You need to come up to Oulton!

March 7 th would be good… ten big circles, but it will probably get cancelled.

I thought it was Sunday 28th March?

Possibly. A lot colder today than Helvellyn imo, although different style being dry.

Anyway, don’t want to feel sorry for myself, can’t be ungrateful for almost a pb (training peaks has adjusted to +1s). By morning I’ll have reset expectations and its a benchmark to try improve same as everyone else.

40s to find through 2021, 4%. Wonder where I could find that from…

That’s the duathlon…?

I think.

Sure the marathon is 7 th?

Events always seem to take place there, when everywhere else gets pulled.

Sorry mate I thought you were talking about the Du.

Hope to do both…

Hope being the operative word.

Sure will get some numbers and pins at some stage this year.

If the Du goes ahead on the 28th I’ll come and do it.
I will live around the corner by then so would be rude not to.

4? miles to Tarp from the track, I think you were looking around there?

You must be loaded!

Sprint

Standard

Or the mans edition…?
