Yeah, that was me, I heard a few people saying hello so apologies if it looked like I was ignoring you, I was actually just trying to stay alive :joy:

Swim was brutal, probably the joint worst I’ve done.

Windy on the bike as well.

Sneaked a long 1:18.

I’ll put something longer on later.

How did you get on?

Good job. Yeah swim was similar to last time I did it, maybe worse. I felt OK when we reached the first buoy. Couldn’t feel as many waves coming back in! I messed up my garmin so not sure what time overall. I might try and merge the files in a bit. We’re staying in Saltburn so going for an afternoon swim. Going to try and get another ride in this week before we go back.

I heard that a cyclist hit a pedestrian out on course. Pedestrian hit their head, fractured skull. Cyclist didn’t stop and was arrested.

What a dick and we used to wonder why people don’t like cyclists…

Crikey, I heard about an accident with a pedestrian and they were asking for witnesses. Got to wonder if they were on the road or not? If you got hit off someone doing 20mph+ it would hurt.

They should have stopped though even if it was the pedestrians fault.

I’m battered, don’t fancy another swim but enjoy and the few days in Saltburn, it’s a nice place and there’s a few other little places down that bit of coast. But avoid Scarborough or poet will tut :joy:

No official results yet, with them being chip timed I’m a bit surprised.

Don’t know where to post this, but having won IMUK three weeks ago, Joe Skipper’s just run himself into 3rd place at Lake Placid at just under the hallway point on the run. FFS.

Do you reckon he can nab 2nd?

Yeah Guileaux or whatever in 2nd has cramped up, he’s running again, but if word gets to Joe he’ll turn it up.

Sweden doing great, leading men’s and women’s race at the moment - I don’t think I know either athlete though :grimacing:

Lisa Nordens first IM I believe. Former Olympic medalist

She’s had a solid race but I think Heather Jackson in 2nd is running strong.

I’ve got it on but silent while getting the kids down

Well well 48s is pretty damn tight for over 8hrs total time!

I did the Redcar triathlon today, had a bit of a mixed day but generally enjoyed it. A lack of running recently hasn’t helped, and training in general TBH. Been feeling a bit rough the previous 10 days or so and had a migraine or two. In the last 5 weeks I’ve averaged about 14K of running and that’s generally been a steady pace, and the swimming has all been in the pool. A faster than planned parkrun yesterday probably wasn’t a great idea either :joy: Anyway, enough of the excuses

After such a long time of not doing a triathlon I wasn’t sure what to expect and the brain was going through the usual motions of why bother! The forecast was at least dry, but windy and overcast. I don’t like the cold.

When I got there the sea looked a bit choppy but not too bad, I was in wave 3, each wave was separated by 10 minutes. The water wasn’t too cold and I’d done a bit of standing in it to try and get used to it. It’s also a long shallow beach which means you are well into the sea before it’s deep enough to swim. The tide was going out as well and even in 20 minutes had moved a bit.

I went in wide to avoid any aggro and still got battered a bit, it was a long way fighting the waves before you could swim and they were a lot bigger at that point. It was really choppy heading to the buoy which was probably about 75M out, with quite a big swell, quite often you’d crest a wave and drop quite a bit and hit another face on. Eventually got round the buoy, things weren’t quite as bad at that point but sighting the next buoy about 600M away was almost impossible in the waves but there was a sighting point on the shore albeit a different angle. I couldn’t see a thing and the goggles steamed up to add to the misery! So I stopped and gave them a rub, I could actually see now. Getting back in was a bit easier. There was then about 400M run to T1.

The swim was really poor, just under 20 minutes including the run. I’ve seen a few friends and I’m either slower or the same when I’d normally be faster. I doubt the sea changed much in 10-20 minutes, so a really poor swim. But a few other people in my wave were slower than I’d expect. It was probably the joint roughest swim I’ve done, the other 2 being just up the coast in the North Sea. And a few fairly choppy ones at Barca.

I dawdled in T1 and threw away another 60-90 seconds putting a top and socks on!

Out onto the bike the legs didn’t feel great, a few people came past reasonably quick so I decided to latch on (draft legal). I was generally holding on and although they pulled away a bit I dragged back about 10 metres on the corners and a few sprints. But rather than a steady pace there was a lot of power spikes, heading towards 800W. The pack started to grow to about 10 people, although I was hanging on a bit. After 2 laps I then realised most were in the start before as a couple started getting out of their shoes. I was gutted when every one of them pulled off! I had another 10k entirely on my own but going past people. I eased back a bit and into the wind section was hard. I think I was about 90 seconds slower on this half.

Bike split was 33:47, was fairly pleased with that, it was reasonably well up (~45th) and it was obvious some had worked together for more than 2 laps. Think the fastest split was only about 31.

Was a lot quicker in T2 but knew a lack of running off the bike would hurt. The legs didn’t seem interested. But after the 1st K they started picking up. The sun had appeared as well and the top I put on wasn’t such a good idea then! But splits did improve a bit, the course was a bit twisty though.

Run split was 22:07, but was 5.2x K, so about a minute longer (same for everyone obvs) and I’d only used the flyknit’s. If I was run fit I think I’d have had about 60-80 seconds off that with the super shoes.

Sneaked a long 1:18. This was about 100th out of about 340 as at least one time looks suspiciously like they missed a bike lap.

A bit further down on where I’d probably expect to be, but having a better swim, T1 and run could have got me nearly 4 minutes I think. But given my current fitness I’m fairly happy. Actually finished a race and I’m not totally crippled!

The season is already a write-off so less pressure of trying to get a fast race time and I’m not going to get too upset about a race that doesn’t really suit me when the swim is a bigger chunk. Good to be racing again though.

I saw Lisa Norden won in her first IM at Placid. She comes across as a really chilled, pleasant lady. Think i watched one of those PTO films about her a while back.

A great debut from her yesterday.

A shame that Heather Jackson cramped up but a convincing win from Norden

Heather Jackson’s run up to 10miles was rapid as see she had cut the lead from 4:40 to 1 minute but going so hard caused her to blow/cramp up as the hamstring seemed to go.

Right!
What middle distances are left this year which you lot are/might be doing?

Noice :ok_hand:t4:

Enjoy. It’s a great race.

I’m keen for something in for September.

No idea what yet

There’s this: Shropshire Tri

I am likely to do the sprint on the same day, my SiL is doing the middle distance.
