Another race tomorrow! Trail half marathon on the moors which is actually about 26k so likely to be near 3 hours again, about 1100m ascent. Entered quite a while ago, before I entered the 3 peaks.
Calf & achilles have been a bit niggly the last few days so need to be careful, think it’s just general tightness though.
TC is doing the full.
Happy to report Nick picked up my bike on Thursday and raced at Eton today. Added bonus, I got the bike back ![]()
I can’t post on the ultra thread again until someone else does but both @tunster and @p00key still going strong in the TP100

Good luck @jeffb
Did the race this morning, another tough day at nearly 27K & 1100M ascent. Conditions were bone dry which made it a bit faster than last year, for some reason I still decided to put a thick L\S top on because I’m a complete wimp! It got quite warm later on when the sun warmed up.
Quite a lonely race though, after the first 2K uphill the front 7 were going away and bar one other person who caught me after about 55 minutes there was hardly anyone else about. I stayed with her for a bit but she started to pull away. Must have raced her about 7 times in the last year!
Was a bit harder to push myself after that, we started catching the backmarkers of the short route, and with nobody obviously chasing me or in front.
About 7 minutes quicker than last year but most of that was conditions, last year was very wet, greasy and windy. Total opposite today.
9th overall but outside the top 10-15 they are fairly thin fields. At first they thought I’d won M50 but then got told I hadn’t ![]()
Time for some steadier training now I think.
Great race Jeff, you can only race who is there. L/S top? Good God ![]()
Yeha I thought Northerners were supposed to be tough?! ![]()
Good stuff Jeff,
I’ve even been running in a vest for a couple of months now!
I’m a bit like fruitthief!
Anything under 20c!
Nice work @jeffb
I was captain cock up racing a super sprint today just to blow the cobwebs off.
- Left my crack pipe at home, couldn’t find one to borrow, so couldn’t inflate rear disc. Judging by the front, it was c45psi.
- Here’s me turning left, and doing a screaming u turn even though there’s a Marshall pointing right.
- Plenty of inept fumbling in transition.
However despite this……
Let’s hope for something more competent at outlaw half next w/e….
Well done!
Early season rustiness, get it out of the way now.
Top stuff ![]()
What did you wear in Boston?!
I had a fairly thick long sleeve top underneath my club vest in Boston as well!
I suspect I’m dehydrating myself more than usual.
Blimey. I was cooking in just a vest, and pouring water over myself from the first aid station!
First tri for almost 3 years yesterday at one of my local events, Stradbroke Supersprint, started badly with me messing up my swim time on the entry and going off at the back of the field with the breaststrokers! Didn’t get any better when I stacked it coming out of T1 when I slipped a pedal and put a couple of holes in my elbow (which were really unpleasant on the tribars!) and knee. Red mist obviously set in and I had a excellent race after that and manged to get my second ever podium with a 2nd place overall! ![]()
Ouch. Great recovery though from a messed up swim and accident.
Hmm, we seem to have two 2022 race threads but this gets more traffic.
Not sure what to make of today’s race, bit of a mixed bag. Weather was about 18c but really windy, well over 30kph I’d say with gusts on top and the water felt pretty cold (for me), I’d say 17c’ish. As a result of the chop on the water the swim was reduced from 1500m to ~500m more because of the safety canoes in the middle of the lake, the wind blows straight across.
Swim was a deepwater start and I stuck to the left where there were less people, the first 250m was across the lake and straight into the chop, it was difficult at times as you get a face full of wave when you tried to breathe or sight, there didn’t seem to be a good side to breathe to, I managed to turn round the first buoy without too much biff. It wasn’t as bad from there and the second buoy seemed to come quickly but was a bit more crowded, my nephew said he got dunked about 4 times! I was starting to feel the cold a bit from there and slowing down, we were directly into the sun and sighting was difficult as my goggles decided to steam up as well
I managed to get out of the water in just under 11 minutes I think.
Usual fannying about in T1, partly due to cold hands and putting a L\S bike top on! Poet would laugh at me, and it probably cost me in the end.
Headed out onto the bike and it just felt difficult, I struggle going from a cold swim to harder bike, but we had a bit of a cross then tailwind for the first 10k, we then turned into the headwind and it was a struggle, this was repeated on the second lap before more of a crosswind for the last 6k back to T2.
My AP was only 243W and I seemed to switch off in the second half as it dropped to about 235W and my HR also dropped about 10bpm. Not sure if it is leg strength but I had been going past people.
As it happens it looks like the bike split wasn’t that bad, other than the top 4-5 two minutes would have put me well up. Managed to get through T2 a lot quicker.
Run was strange, it felt like I was pushing but not really going quick, but it was mostly on long grass, very rough track and other assorted trails, I didn’t look at my splits as I wasn’t that interested, I couldn’t have gone much faster. A few went past me though but other than one person they didn’t really get that much further.
With about 1.2k to go the route goes across a field as I’ve done the steelman quite a few times and somebody was just going past me at that point and asked which way, I then saw a load of people to the campsite at the left trying to get back on course. There’s some confusion as to whether a marshal said to go across but I think it’s more likely they misunderstood then the rest followed! The guy overtaking me would have probably followed, but I also saw some arrows on the ground so knew it was right.
I think a few were a bit upset at the end, although the ones that followed only had themselves to blame and the fell runner in me had little sympathy
knowledge of the route is your responsibility! I think somebody probably misunderstood the marshal and a few blindly followed but TBF some wouldn’t have known the steelman route.
Anyway, my run was about 10.4k but just under 47 minutes, but the fastest run was 40:16 so a slow course. My HR was reasonably high so I was obviously pushing. I think tarmac pace would have been about 43:xx
Think I was about 27th overall but for some reason my times aren’t in the provisional results, I’ve let them know. Another 90 seconds would have probably bumped me about 7 places, but partly because of a few of them doing an extra 300m or so. And as above, T1 didn’t help my cause.
It was a decent enjoyable race despite the conditions though, road surfaces are slow but mostly traffic free.
Never thought I’d ever say this but if the swim was full distance I’d have probably taken enough time out of a few just in front to beat them, but… a few better swimmers might have held me off.
Well done Jeff
