2022 races

Off the bike 6:04. Assuming that first section was tailwind/downhill, as he said he expected a tough finish.

How does the tracker give predicted finish time now at t2? Based on the average finishers run slot, or clever enough to know his previous run times?

He’s into top 50 in AG :muscle:t4::muscle:t4:

Seems to predict 3:5x for men and 4:2x for women at run start of the few I sampled but some variability… So :person_shrugging:

If T1 was ready brek, I’m going with a parmo in T2 to remind him of home. He might regret that in an hours time though.

Haha, the transition area must be massive and I guess everyone has to do a lap to make it fair

Tracker is estimating an 11:57 finish but a long way to go

Jeff just through 14.8km and going great. Keep going strong and next week will be a breeze with this training in your legs (Skipper style). Bed for me now :+1:

Good going @jeffb keen to know how it went re thoughts of StG next week.

11:24 total: 53 - 0:17 - 6:04 - 0:11 - 3:57

24th in AG: 71st - 66th - 17th

Judging by the run pacing (speeding up last few miles) and that 17th place split I’d guess it wasn’t holding that much back.

Thanks everyone :grinning:

FML that was soul destroying, it made the Hamburg audax seem like a pleasant ride!

You can now call me Billy the fish :joy: the swim time had nothing to do with it being short and there might have been a bit of a current :joy: although I didn’t really notice it much apart from one bit. TBH it wasn’t that strong in the first 2K, it was where the rivers merged to the end. Other than that it was a very hassle free swim due to the rolling start and I think a lot of people got there quite late due to a lack of buses and too many spectators trying to jump on :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: they couldn’t actually see the start anyway!

The short swim was offset by the mammoth T1! Nearly 2K most of which on cold concrete then around the stadium. I took a bit longer to get changed into some bike kit and put a base layer on as it was a bit chilly. Also needed the loo!

The wind was already about 20mph but was behind us a lot of the way out, there was also a 6K section on crappy roads that you did 4 times that any council in the Uk would have been proud of :rage:

Once you turned round the wind was brutal, just trying to avoid getting blown into the ditch in some places was a bonus. Fairly sure it picked up on the second lap as well. I was in a right strop :joy: nearly everyone from round here said it’s very rare to get a wind like that :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

I also had another problem, my bladder! I had to stop about 5 times for a leak and another 2 times to check if someone was alright after coming off, and to get some food from my special needs bag. These stops must have cost a bit of time, I hardly ever need to stop on the bike and it wasn’t like I’d drank that much either :man_shrugging:t2:

T2 was fairly long and I decided to get changed into running gear for the comfort, and surprisingly I needed the loo again

Also took a few minutes to put on some sunsplat, the sun is still quite strong here and I can feel my lips burning! After what my friend has gone through it’s an absolute no brainer!

Got onto the run and felt fairly good, only a couple of grumbles from my leg which faded as the other pain took over :joy:

The wind was still there and regularly in our face but I was quite enjoying it, until I wasn’t! The gingerbread man appeared and luckily I was just near an aid station! That probably cost me at least 5 minutes looking at my splits. It took a while to get going again but I was generally only walking at the aid stations and shuffled on soon after. I think UTMB proved I could keep going and I kept thinking back to that!

When I got into the town I realised I still had a chance of a sub 4 run, so tried picking up the pace, it felt like I was running well and flying past people in the last 4K but the splits suggest I was barely doing an easy pace run :joy:

Anyway I made it with a few minutes to spare and got called out by Mike Reilly

I knew I wasn’t in sub 10 shape and without the wind and toilet problems I’d have probably been around 11 hours or under. That’s why these races are so frustrating and hard to have a time target as you just don’t know the conditions or what the course is like. My last 3 races have been ruined by 10c temps, heavy rain and wind, then 35c heat and wind, and today the wind again.

But I shouldn’t be too disappointed with 25th out of nearly 400 in my AG so far, and my run is currently 215th overall out of nearly 3000 so far.

Some fairly easy time I could have found and the TT bike might have gained some time. Yes, I know the swim was false but the same for everyone.

There’s also the recovery of UTMB and a few other things that haven’t helped and a lack of long rides for various reasons.

But… I do struggle with these long races, I just can’t get my head round them these days so I don’t see me entering anymore for a few years! Not at that cost, although I’ve enjoyed the holiday so far.

Just need to see if I can still walk next Saturday :joy:

Brilliant effort Jeff  I do admire you doing all these races, making the most of every event and just being bloody tough from start to finish. Also really nice of you to stop and see if others are ok after coming off their bikes, not everyone would do that!!

Thanks, been a pretty extreme year due to all the carryover races.

2 other people also stopped and when it was reasonably obvious he was just shaken I continued as it didn’t need 3 of us. Luckily for him he was going into the headwind so probably doing barely 20kph

Lead AGs swam 41min so thats only ~6-8min faster than a fair course for them… Maybe you are the new Billy

Great race Jeff, you should join @Poet for a race, 2 lots of bad luck cancel each other out.

Sounds like you coped well with very tough conditions, however, lots of wind and bad roads sound just like UK, so you were better prepared than most

That swim was incredible, doesn’t matter if it was short and current assisted, it was still a great swim

Bit of a short recovery before Utah, that’s a pretty aggressive schedule. Hope you manage to relax for the next few days
