Ironman expensive?

Mrs TRO is doing Escape from Alcatraz - I noted they run an aquathlon the day before - 750m swim/5k run.

Thought it would be fun……but not at 325USD + Active Fee.

That’s about 100 bucks per mile of racing.

I’m sure you wouldn’t want to return to the same venue but 51fiver is flat.

Comparing Cotswold Classic to Cascais 70.3 considering they are a similar entry price, IMO the VFM was VAST! Obviously I fully under its alot more expensive to put an event on in the UK. But loads of fully closed roads, including dual carriage ways, stacks of police presence, on course ambulances, lapping a race circuit, more aid stations etc. Before mentioning event venue. This isn’t me saying Cotswold is a bad event, far from it. But if you are comparing purely on what you get for your entry fee…

I’m more surprised Cotswold is the same entry fee as an IM branded event? If so then not surprised there’s a difference in VLM; as much as I begrudge some of IM ™️ they do put on Good quality events.

Just checked as I didn’t want to spread misinformation. Cotswold is £188 this year vs Cascais £225 last year.

That’s a good 20% increase, which is pretty significant still.

I thought the IMs were in the high 200s to be honest. £225 is ‘relatively’ palatable.

It’s been a few years since I did a race, but I was a little surprised to be paying almost 200 notes for a HIM

Yeah, I think my first Cotswold Classic was only just over £100, something like £115. And that wasn’t entering super early entry either, as I remember entering on New Year’s Eve

My reasoning at the time was I’d happily pay the extra for almost guaranteed good weather and sunshine. As at the time I booked it was either Cotswold or Cascais. Then covid and I got bored and wanted some more events to do.

I’ve just paid an obscene amount of money for the 70.3 WC race. Yet to look into flights, hotel, hire car etc :disappointed_relieved:

It’s a UK thing though isn’t it? IM Staffs is north of £300.

Cotswold 113 and Classic sell out. Costs will have gone up over the last few years. Will be interesting to see if Outlaw Bowood has an impact, different kind of course and different time of year, but close by.

There are cheaper options if you want them:

This is the main thing that puts me of both Wales and Bolton. I can cope with it for a cheaper event if the day is ruined by weather. With the Euro races I faniced for 2022 already at tier 4-5 with so many deferrals I hoping 2023 will be possible for me.

And that’s before the two toll charges you’ll pay :joy:

Cascais hasn’t even opened for entry yet…but I presume the dates don’t work for you.

Yeah it probably is a UK thing. I was just giving my perspective on my reasoning at the time of booking. That Titan looks a bargain though.

Make a holiday of it and enter IM California the week before , plenty of recovery time!

Wife would love that

I remember being quite surprised with how ‘cheap’ IM South Africa was back in 2016. About £250 iirc

Not really, I find the summer holidays massively disrupt my training and routine in general.

My season plans for 2022 have just been dealt a curveball with the announcement of IM 70.3 Swansea in August. Already signed up to do Nice 70.3 in June and planned to do a bike focus after that. However given the bike course goes past my parents door and transition is barely a stones throw from my house it’d be rude not to! Although, linked to the comments above, the Tier 5 price is £340!!
