I’m not sure, I’ve always been able to roll over it & they had put some skateboard grip tape over the middle.
A bigger hazard was passing zig-zag riders towards the end when everyone is beyond the limit.

Jaysus!!!
Looks INCREDIBLE ![]()
It wasn’t that busy when Dean Downing (?) won at Monday Head circa 2008 (that’s the last one I went to)
I’d have commented on your ride, but you don’t wanna be my Strava friend (or foe) ![]()
Would that be the full length of the struggle or just the bottom half? Might be even more interesting if included the middle flat/downhill section. Love that climb after Helvellyn tri!
You’d be a a very long time if you were in the Lakes looking for this hill. Doony was racing in North Wales ![]()
You’ll be just as long looking for the start line next year ![]()
I think it’s taking in the top part - missing out the initial climb out of Ambleside - so there will be that downhill section
.

That bottom section is just as good as the top imo, still pretty steep and you know you’ve still got 4km to pace yourself up (+ the small matter of a run/jog/walk to save yourself for in the tri)
Touché. Well, not quite touché I was just wrong!

A guy from BL13, Mark Elding was there - his race report is not as good as yours though
It looks completely bonkers
fair play top work Doonie . ![]()
somewhere near Wrexham I guess, wots the hill?
Thanks T_C, it was The Old Shoe.
Any idea where you lie on the V50 Old Fellas
Leaderboard?
Somewhere in the middle, I’ll try & do better next year.
a little video from Ironman Langkawi 2022 - and we get worried by a bit of rain!
Would love to have read their event risk assessment
Probably similar to some peaks/moors race I’ve done where the answer to everything is just ‘mountain rescue’
Enjoyed that. What an amazing day today. Must’ve been 16 degrees at least and sunny. I’ll do a bit more of write up later.
So. Had a lovely day out today. Couldn’t have asked for better really. Weird Nov weather, very mild. My (standard) choice of short shorts and vest turned out very sensible! Didn’t expect to be worrying about sweat rate and hydration on a November ultra!
Bad night sleep. Despite only deciding to do it just over a week ago, it appeared that the dragon awoke last night and started as he meant to go on by rattling that cage hard.
Set off with a mate. Staggered start any time between x and y. I thought we were trotting pretty easily for the first 10km, which we went through in about an hour. But it would later transpire that it was way to hard for my buddy. Basically I broke him in the first hour! ![]()
I’d given him the idea to do this. Hadn’t realised it was his first ultra. So he had no training for it either, though he’s a fit guy anyway. I was honestly expecting the distance and the hills to really hurt me pretty much straight away. But it didn’t.
Instead the dragon was getting very violent and really wanted out. Especially when a couple of runners came clipping past. I had to get the fireman’s hose and spray the bastard down. Spent the first 2.5 hrs like a caged animal desperate to be let off the leash and be competitive. Pity I didn’t have these feelings last week or if have entered on my own. But on the other hand really good to know it still lives inside and is alive and well.
After about 3 hours I managed to finally settle and enjoy myself. I’d brought him along so I wasn’t gonna just ditch him on his first one, with no real nav experience. However with every hour that passed he struggled a bit more. I was expecting rhe distance to bite despite the slow pace, but it just didn’t. I felt great the whole way around.
Cant be bothered to go into detail on the nav, but as above yeah i missed one trig!
. Couple of wrong/missed turns and a hack through some fields. Typical me! ![]()
So it was basically a day of getting my ego in check. But at the same time, I’m genuinely surprised how well my body just absorbed the load. It was still 53 off road kms with 1300m elevation. And I ran a couple of kms to the start. So a great training day and a good one for the confidence.
So not an interesting report other than me justifying that I could’ve gone faster. Stupid ego again I guess!

Nice work! Amazing to get a day like that in November. Could have been 53km of grim.
Last race of 2022 done. Sprint duathlon. Will update when I can access the results (suffice to say, I didn’t win!)
Onwards now to Hyrox in January.
