If it takes the distance down you can always revert to the original distance
Probably too late now @Chriswim but have a look at the Alpine Classic in Bright. It’s on Oz weekend in Bright, Vic. It’s pretty scorchio but a beautiful part of the world and not a massive distance from you.
One thing I’ve realised (I’ve always known this if I’m honest) is that I’m hopeless without regular racing. I lose focus and ambition. I see now why getting all those Zwift badges was important to me during lockdown.
If there were no races or events, I’d weigh about 120kgs and probably know more about Love Island than I’d wish to confess. So I think generally, I’m going to target 50km races but if I can’t find one or am knackered, I want to commit to one race a month. I don’t care if it’s a low key 10km or whatever.
I’m finding putting everything into two or three massive events over the year, leads to a very bad mental place for me, if I don’t get a finish. I definitely need the little kickstarts along the way. I’d also like to look at some mtb/ gravel events for cross training.
Low key and local (ish) for most of the year will hopefully put me in a better place, head wise.
Im the same, in the past I have done very well with setting a few race targets and going for them. Trouble I have had recently is they have become a source of stress more than a target, especially after the IM Lanza disaster.
Doesn’t seem much point setting a target of say a Half IM, because I have done those, most years ago so unlikely to be able to do them faster
If that’s aged based sandbagging you’ll have to try harder . Your a mere youth aren’t you? Look at what Spoons has achieved at 50.
50 is the new, er , something
This the problem I have with Olympic / 70.3 racing…. Sprints too being honest.
You have to draw a line under it and realise I’m mid 50”s, if you did the same times two decades earlier what on earth were you doing in your prime?
It’s why we race in age groups I guess, pick a number sub… whatever … no one but you really cares to be honest I totally agree with FP regular daft little races are a big target, even oarkruns… not sure about 50 k run races there a bit strange to be honest
Sorted out my Month of Misery
Those last four can hang around until the weather gets crap again.
MMM…174km on Zwift
(Is it cheating to stick my phone in my back pocket and pair it to my pedals whilst I’m riding IRL )
Thanks, not seen that as a sportif but knew the region was famous. Club Jan training camp fell through the last two years, but a group went anyway and think they did that route.
£140 for a sportif is definitely stretching budgets.
Had looked at a great ocean road one in April
Wow is it that much now? It’s a brilliant weekend though, very Aussie/French theme, or at least used to be.
There is weekend of racing there (if you have a CA licence?) it’s in March and has a TT, road race and other stuff. I can’t remember the name but it would be getting on the cooler side then.
It is beautiful part f the world, well worth a visit as a couple or with a few mates and just do some training. Great bakeries and nice places to eat.
I’ve never understood the attraction of the GoR myself. All the pics you see are of fantastic sea vistas and the Seven Sisters but only about 15km of it is like like that. The rest is slightly inland.
There is also ‘Around the Bay in a Day’ but I can’t remember the time of year for that one.
Just found this thread.
Nothing formal till May whenI am doing the heaven of the South race. Until then it’s all about conditioning, weight loss and mindset.
Come summer I want to do something long distance, looking at a few events, but also Audax-curious. Also mulling over a 70.3, Warsaw is quite flat, that all hinges on my swimming improving.
Finally I want to be in good enough shape to wring every second of value out of my trip to CLS next October.
Mates reckoned it was an absolute draft fest!
Currently trying to give the State Series another bash as it is very good $$$ even though it’s just low-key racing, but I’ll only do 4 of the 6 races. I’m leading after doing 3 of 4, but think I’ll get pipped into second if one competitor does both the next two.
Got a good excuse for missing the main finale though, I’ll be in New Zealand. Not yet entered or said it on here and I debated back and forth a little while but we’ve planned the holiday around me racing Ironman Taupo on March 4th. We had the holiday initially lined up for 2020 before covid stopped it and Taupo is definitely my bucket list race so hugely looking forward to it and the next 6 weeks.
After that it’s a very empty feeling sporting year, but I really do need to think about career progression too so not such bad timing. There’s nothing in triathlon in Oceania that hugely excites me and I’m busy the Cairns weekend.
Thought about doing a long swim as that’s always been a dream and there are some amazing ones here like Rottnest Channel, but there’s no 10k events in South Australia I could use as a qualifier to do a long one, plus don’t know if I could get a support crew organised to kayak.
There are a few hills locally used as Everests, and that appeals so maybe once it gets back round to Spring I’ll look at that.
Heading towards June, anyone achieved any of their targets, fairly sure a couple have?
Let’s just say I’m pacing myself with the sporting ones
I did add 3 capitals though, including Serbia.
I think currently my most achievable might be the 70.3 as I’ve not actually got any other races entered.
I still haven’t managed to reach my first one - decided what my targets were (other than NZ)
Think it helps to … set really vague goals
Guess I could flesh the swim goals out a little. Dipped under 6 minutes for 400m now, so for the rest of the year:
bronze: 750m sub 11m15
silver: 1000m sub 15
gold: 1500m sub 22m30 (this would be also be a PB)
SPICY!!!
I’ve an 11:07 750m, which I cannot recall!
But I do remember my 14:48 1000m, as I only did that last year, when I couldn’t run - in the worlds warmest shallow pool!
Felt okay, apart from my head wanting to explode and me nearly passing out.
Never got below 22:30 for the 1,500m
Managed a 22:33 as part of a 3.8km TT (28:35 for 1,900m and a massive decay to finish in 57:44)
GOOD LUCK!!!
A “fun” one is trying to get your 25m below 15s…
Or, smashing out 100s like you’ve nowt else better to do!
(My 100 time was also set last year at 1:17, 200 also last year at 2:40, 25 also last year at 16s)
I’ve raced every month since Nov last year. Mostly 50kms but a one 69km.
Had a DNS on May 1st for a 50km due to my calf.
Had a DNF on May 20 (which probably should have been a DNS as well).
Training has been a bit compromised (a lot) so races have been winged a bit. That’s not a situation that can continue.
I have The Hampshire Hoppit trail marathon on Father’s Day, Serpent Trail 20km on July 1st but the biggest challenge so far will be the 100km RacettStones on July 8th.
typo? Or a dodgy garmin? Or a forgotten dream?
Typo!! Ha ha ha, 11:07
'23 so far…Parkrun time - & any speedier running - hasn’t really happened this season although I managed a 19:26 at the Harlech Duathlon were I nicked my AG. The Gralloch was brutal fun but I was never challenging for a place at the World’s…not even if I was in the next AG.
Chtriman is potentially a fast, fast course but I don’t have the commitment to do anything more than complete. I miss the fire that was lit with the Sausage Fest last year & I’m more than content to cycle out with my man Sean .
After Chtriman is done with I’ve got a bucket list event that I want to do in '24 but I’ll need to help my daughter out with her new house first & work up a shit load of brownie points with the wifey.
