I’ve had that before because of the windchill but I think it’s slightly better this weekend, but any showers might make the roads greasy.
Are you working? I’m wondering if Tony and Sandra from our club will be helping?

no - not at Sunderland. Me and Mrs FB were going to be originally but the travel logistics from our home in Wales to Sunderland and back meant it just wouldn’t work effectively for us so we withdrew.
You aren’t missing much
murky lake sw1m at Castle Howard was still toasty this weekend
shame the roads were still sw1mming as well, as Sunday’s bike was cancelled, which was a fair call. (Umpteen crashes on Sat’s sprints, submerged potholes, folks just couldnt stop etc) So my Gauntlet HalfIM was a Swim-Run:
1.9k sw1m and a half mara muddy trail run. still loved it. and a bit weird to be attacking the run almost fresh, with no excuse to be ‘pacing’ it, as not fecked from the bike. we just about missed the heavy rain on Sunday too, it was pleasant despite being damp n muddy. Unbeatable venue.
looks oarsum
I did the Standard distance, a few grumbles from some people about the cancelled bike. I think it was probably the right call as those roads are quite narrow and there would have been a lot of bike & car traffic. It was an age group qualifier so they are going to decide whether it will count or not. Anyone know what they’ve done in the past if one of the legs has been cancelled, did it still count?
The water was very murkey, I’m glad I only had 1.5k to swim. I should have worn clear goggles (as opposed to tinted) as I couldn’t sight the buoys! really enjoyed the run route, although I forgot to put some vaseline on my shoes and my heels were cut up at the end
inevitable!!
cancelling the bike is pretty unprecedented, has never happened to Castles before. (e.g. Its always been particularly good weather at Castle Howard for the last ten yrs til now FWIW)
Usually it’s the sw1m that get cancelled (swapped) due to a rough sea (or potentially blue green algae etc).
I must have done 250? tri’s, and only twice has the sw1m been swapped to a run, due to rough seas both times.
I didnt do the sole edition of the Isle of Man XTri IM (2019 ish?) but their sw1m was just totally cancelled due to a choppy sea, and folks just started on the bike. then did the run. full stop.
The 2019 Outlaw was unprecedented in that the bike was cancelled DURING the sw1m, as there was a chuffin monsoon after the sw1m started. the roads were literally awash. So we had an hrs break followed by a rolling start marafun. totally exceptional.
I’ve been to some where they’ve reduced the swim because it was too cold! I was wondering if a swim had been cancelled but they still allowed it to be an AG qualifier.
I remember hearing about the 2019 Outlaw, I must have read about that on hear. Mad that it got cancelled during the swim!
I had a swim cancelled at Eton Dorney because algae. There were loads of people moaning about it, and then moaning why they need to pay the triathlon England day license when it was a duathlon. Get that its frustrating but people seem to think all these things should be in the control of the race organisers when its impossible.
Although I did read later on that Eton college were working on something to prevent algae as it was causing so many problems like this
Yeah, it’s annoying for the organisers as they know they’ll get some kick back. I overheard someone saying they wanted a discount because the Aquathlon race was half the cost of the Triathlon. I’m sure they have that covered in the terms.
any ‘Castle’ / Stately Home type sw1m is likely to be murky as they’re typically shallow artificial lakes. Belvoir and Holkham are the same, but worse apparently. Eastnor Castle was another. Its expectation management. You aren’t going to race somewhere like that and have crystal clear water basically. Blenheim’s is the best, and it’s really not bad at all. Now that is the Ultimate tri paradise. My main sell / share to anyone I meet is that they should do the Weekend Warrior option there. its a totally fab orgy of tri in a spectacular venue.
so I’m sw1mming around in my normal g0d like fashion and not noticing bikes whizzing round the lake. Penny soon dropped unexpectedly as we exited the lake in a blur, to be met by marshalls giving us the news. we were all pretty shell shocked, as all fired up for T1 and to jump on the bikes. it was weird.
Lots of sub 10 Ironman’s that day
Including poet!
I saw the weather forecast and after seeing the proposed shortened bike course there was no way I was going to travel down for this. The 45km bike loop was carnage last year with the multi events out at the same time.
For the duathlon it was the most expensive trail run ever as no refund or discount was offered
How did you go @wheezy ?
Sorry, I never go in that thread. will have a look now
@TROSaracen did you say you’re doing Duisburg this weekend?
I know someone else doing it
a couple of weekend triathlons in the UK have been cancelled today due to the shite weather forecast for tomorrow
Any idea which ones? The weather for the steelman is looking garbage, I’m likely to do a parkrun or maybe just the swim.
