Here’s an action shot from this morning.

How did you find the conditions? I was only watching (for the first hour) but it didn’t feel too windy but it was a cold wind and very exposed. Also, how was it when the half marathon and 10k races started (well after the 20 mile and marathons started)? Did you pace yourself via watch or keep an eye on lap times, or both.

So many questions… sorry.

Thanks all and a huge thanks to @funkin for coming out, it really helped getting me settled in. To answer your questions mate:

That t-shirt came off and got dumped on the chicane wall at the end of either the 2nd or 3rd lap and the gloves came off and got stuffed in my pocket. The only really cold part was ‘Siberia’ at the back of the circuit, it’s always bloody freezing there. Temps were ok if you moved but I wouldn’t have wanted to be walking around in it, like some were.

Yes it got noticeably busier on laps 4,5 and 6, then thinned out again for 7 and 8. Lots of fast folks weaving in and out like crazy but everyone that I saw, was chilled about it.

Pace wise, bit of a mixed bag really, tried to roughly run 5.30/kms but the back of that circuit plays havoc with GPS, so it was mostly on feel with cursory looks at the watch. It was more a case of ‘run the whole thing, don’t quit and see how you feel with two laps to go’.
Interestingly, my last km was the fastest at 5.02 and the last lap was was my fastest overall.

This was my longest road run since I did the marathon here with @Sparky , 3yrs ago? I’ve only done the 20 mile distance once before at Bramley, pre Covid, which was a 2.56.

I must have misread my watch because Garmin connect says 2.54.10

Cheers mate, yes, two hard but different efforts in a fortnight, definitely something to mentally build on. I have the 42km Big Mud in two weeks.

Excellent run @FatPom; so when we ran, we went through 20 miles in bang on 3 hours (9mins/mile pace) so you have to be happy with that time

2nd in your AG and when you’re not used to road running that distance is excellent. I’d not been to watch one of these events (runthrough.co.uk) before but I thought it seemed really well organised and with lots of events taking place for the couple of hours I was there the atmosphere was good as there were a lot of people about. As you said to me in person getting there early for the longer races was great as we got to use the car parking literally right by the start/finish (they opened up the further away ‘field’ car park later on).

One thing that impressed me was that quite a few (10+ at least) put their hands up at the briefing/warm-up saying it was their first marathon. It’s good that this mainly spectator-free event attracts people rather than the big city marathons (I guess the ease of entry helps). My first marathon was London and that’s quite a different experience to running laps of a motor racing circuit.

Glad you had a good run. Well done.

They’re holding a running festival at our local racing track soon with multiple distances but it’s a bit boring and there’s a little drag on each lap!

Pretty sure they run the local half which I did last year and probably doing in 3 weeks which was well organised.

It’s not great TBH, very stiff back last night but ok today. Some thigh/quad DOMS but the most pain is the top of my left foot.
I hadn’t worn the Next % since @Sparky and I ran, so maybe I had the mid foot too tightly locked down?

Anyway, made it to the office but was quite the effort

Cheers mate, like you say, Run Through are very welcoming and their enthusiasm is really good.

There are so many different threads this could go in but I’m putting it here. It’s an early birthday promise to myself, rather than a present but…

This is definitely my last year/season of going long. It will absolutely be my last attempt at 100 miles in June. I’m pretty sure I want one more crack at the NC110km.

I’m getting tired of my back screaming and the reality is that my body is just suited to the 50km distance better and last Sunday’s race made me realise simply how much better suited I am at road running than ultra.

I’m very excited and enthusiastic still for SDW50, 100 and the NC110 but my 60th year will mark the end of banging my head against a wall. I’ve hinted at it before but always get sucked back in and I need to draw a line under it at some point and this year will be that line I’m very sure.

I have a packed race schedule, so no time to dwell on things but am just setting a limit on the distances I’m constantly chasing.

On the plus side, i’m 2 for 2 on finishes so far this year  :crossed_fingers:t2:

It will be a pleasure (as always) to see you at SDW50, SDW100 and more than likely at the NC110km
