2025 Races

Influenza has arrived in the north east, flying round the students seeing several coming in each night. For what they’re worth I Hope vaccines roll out before it hits the care homes.

Never clicking that link but isn’t Berlin a point to point marathon? In other words, he was running in…

Wow, saw he’d done it but didn’t realise sub 3. Impressive!

Report from today if anyone is interested or bored!

I did genuinely have a migraine on Thursday morning but was looking forward to the race if my body held up! I was pretty sure the distance wouldn’t be a problem after 2 70.3’s in the last couple of weeks and although it’s 6 weeks until Italy it was still a good training session. The races usually have a couple of decent runners at the front but aren’t very deep fields.

We lined up with the 24k (half marathon) runners and I went near the front as there’s a narrow part near the start. One young lad went off quickly and after about 1k that was the last we saw of him! He did 2:15 and knocked 28 minutes off the course record, I gather he’s a fell runner from the Lakes but that would probably equal something like a 2:30 marathon I reckon.

I stayed in a group with 3 others as we moved away from the rest of the field, I was fairly sure we were all doing the same distance, the pace wasn’t particularly fast which was good. But after about 6k we started to split, I was third in the group but decided trying to keep up wasn’t a good idea. One of them did actually drop back to talk to someone doing the ultra then came back past me around 11k and moved away.

I was still doing a reasonable pace and a lot had been on road\path or good track and I was a bit surprised to go through 11k in 58 minutes! There was a few more technical sessions in the second third of the race and I could see the lad behind me was about 2-3 minutes back but not really catching, I was also fairly sure all of them were under 50!

We then came to a long uphill drag into a breeze that was on tarmac but straight and about 2.5k, I could still see him behind me but just tried keeping the same pace, the second aid station was just after the top and I decided to get a drink, I’d been sipping on my 2 bottles, had some jelly sweets and a mars bar. This was 22k and the second section took a bit longer but I thought I could get about 3:05, I’d hoped for under 3:10 before the start.

We were going down a track at this point which was slightly downhill and nice, then came to a main road, I saw some tape and my watch was showing a turn but there was no obvious stile into the field and I thought we were keeping to the road, I was going off course a bit but went round a corner roughly in the right direction, there was a big gate into the field so I went in and started cutting across to get back on the route, I couldn’t see him at first then heard him shout, fairly sure he was local and knew the route well. It was good of him to shout me but I’ve done the same in other races and I was back on the route by then. But he’d got within about a minute!

There was then another decent descent that was on track\trail and I decided to try and pick the pace up a bit in the hope he might fall back, it worked, I later found out he thought he was getting cramp in his calf’s. But when we got to another long road I looked back and he was nowhere, there was about 3k to go and I then realised I had a good chance of breaking 3 hours again.

But with about 1k to go I started to feel my left hamstring tighten :face_with_symbols_on_mouth: I couldn’t see anyone else behind or in front that I recognised so kept it fairly steady and got back to the finish in 2:57 according to their timing!

I was happy to get under 3 hours despite it being fairly flat, almost bone dry and good conditions, going on previous years it isn’t a bad time but still only got me fourth overall, third was about 4 minutes ahead in the end.

Still a bit frustrated that I had a good day today and if I’d been running like that last weekend I’m fairly sure I’d have broke 5 hours but that’s how it goes sometimes.

Just need to see how I feel, got a massage on Monday and I’ve got a few of the usual niggles groaning which I’d expect.

Vitality 10k.

Best this year 53:54.

Got on the train at 08:38, jogged to Green Park from CHX stopped for a piss and still made the 09:48 wave start :+1:

Nice launch from The Mall running around lots of the landmarks, held a pretty steady pace for me around 5:20/km and felt easy for the first 3km but held it there. Daydreamed about work a bit around 6/7th km but knuckled down to maintain pace through 8 and 9 a bit worried about falling apart but in fact I sprinted all out to the finish so probably held a bit back - which was the plan.

A way of my PB but a confidence builder that I’m on track.

4th weekend of racing (3 duathlons and a park run) and another 2nd place overall and 1st in AG. My run, I have to accept is now limited by age and by injury from earlier in the year but my bike is still my get out of jail card. Had a great time racing my son in his new placement location so I was running scared on the second run as he rounded out the podium.

parkrun ?

I know, my son and his running club use it as part of a interval 10miler so 5.5km there, smash out the parkrun and continue to run back home again
