Strewth that’s a hard race. Can’t wait to hear the report although suspect it may be a little while before coherent typing is possible ![]()

Thanks, Doon ![]()
Safe to say the run was a disaster but stomach issues rather than the knee, it should have been a decent run for me as it’s quite a lot of trail.
You’ll be able to see on Strava when I stopped to throw up
I’d started wretching a bit at the top of ADH.
It was more stubbornness that kept me going and knowing I was nearly halfway through the run.
Pretty sure I should have done the run at least 30 minutes faster, but when you’ve gone you’ve gone.
Will do something longer tomorrow if I get chance.
I did get this Panama though
will come in useful when I retire from this stupidity soon!
I expect you to wear that hat for the run on your next local sprint tri

There’s a chap from Colt Tri (Chris) who wears a cowboy hat (I normally see a photo of him on the run at IM Lanza) like TC does denim. That hat would have gone down well last week when I went to Goodwood races.
So do I need to enter this next year then Jeff?
Well done, looks like a big day out - especially that bike course.
Am I right in thinking you can only swim in that lake for the triathlon?
yes the lake is part of their hydro electric company or something like that , they said it was going to be colder than it felt . i remember your right next to shore on way out to first buoy ,think it was 2 loops
smart hat ![]()
If you can get it signed off by the boss!
As Stiv says there’s no swimming outside of the race. And don’t expect it to be warm, although I managed and would guess it was maybe 18c.
It’s still quite a popular event, something like 1700 were registered I think, it’s also fairly cheap compared to an Ironman.
Don’t underestimate it though, especially the bike, you need to think around Ironman time, there’s 3 significant climbs and a shorter one. Although the Ornon can be mostly tackled on the big ring. Just need to remember the climb at the end.
Run is mixed surface, fair bit of trail but not technical and plenty of people had super shoes on. And had 450m of ascent.
It’s not quite as polished as an Ironman but you can take your kids over the finish line, and the kids race looked good for them if they can swim.
If you’re going I’d try and do the long though, the shorter race is still good but go for the big one!
Or maybe double up like I did with the duathlon, it’s a shorter race.
Fairly sure we can give you location tips if you enter.
I did the ‘Oly’ distance Alpe D Huez race in 2014. It’s deffo one of my top sporting days out. The lake swim was ace.
I did the ADH long course yonks ago. Think it was the hardest race I have ever done, found it harder than IMUK because of the massive bike climbs, and on reflection probably was way undertrained too. Ended up walking much of the run and lying flat on my back in the shade for half an hour at the end. But it was a great day out with incredible scenery from start to finish.
I survived the trail race today despite being sick a bit and upset stomach at midnight after some muppet had eaten too many peanuts ![]()
I had a couple of peptobismol tablets which eased it but still a bit upset before and after.
It was starting to get quite hot as the 16k race started at 11am. But there was shade for some of it, particularly the main climb.
I tried to start fairly steady and it split quite a bit even after 2k with a small group going off the front. Running past the lake was very tempting to jump in! Quite a bit was on hard gravel track but completely flat, it saps your legs and slows you down, and my legs were already heavy from the previous races.
I did catch a couple that had gone too quick and a couple caught me up the climb but I’m not sure if some were from the other races
then a guy that looked about my age caught me and went past me but didn’t really go any further than about 10m, he then stopped at the aid station. After this was the main climb, narrow and steep and took me nearly 15 minutes for 1k! It slowly levelled off before reaching the peak.
By this time the other guy wasn’t far behind, I was a bit nervous the descent would be narrow and tricky as I wasn’t going to take any risks of falling and injuring myself again. But it was a wide track that a 4*4 could get up and easy to descend although I was still careful.
About halfway down he caught and went past me but never got further about 20m and I got a bit closer at the bottom. At this stage there was nobody in sight ahead or that close behind. I was keeping pace with my mate in case he fell back. Then with about 3k to go he slowed and walked the small climb up the bridge. I went past and started moving away ![]()
I was back on the gravel at this stage and it was hard work, I was hot and hanging on, just under 5 minute K’s felt hard
I had the odd glance back and nobody was going to outsprint me ![]()
The last section was a long car park, probably 700m and as hard as I ran the finish didn’t seem to get any closer
eventually got there and sat in some shade for about 5 minutes!
Turned out the other guy was slightly older than me so my efforts helped me stay in front, from what I can see I was first over 50 but they only awarded
the top 3 of both sexes ![]()
Final time was 1:33:51, frustrating I didn’t run better on Wednesday ![]()
Trying to rehydrate now ![]()
No idea where to put this, 2006 not 2026.
20 years ago it looks like @funkster , @SidSnot and yours truly might have been lining up at the Dambuster Tri.
Looks like @funkster had the honours that day:
Looks like a closely fought thing. In my memory it was a sprint tri, but the timings would suggest it was actually an Oly. Where did those years go.
That’s not robh is it?
Edit: don’t think it is, think it’s a different surname.
Ooh hadn’t spotted that , could be
That was a GB age group qualifier for Lausanne
The guy one place ahead, sprinted past me in the finish chute and took the final slot for my AG.
I had to go to another race and get a slot. Met the guy whilst over there and had a good laugh about.
Was the year Tim Don won. Ali B won the Youth and I bumped into him in the supermarket.
Following the after party a bunch of us ended going skinny dipping in Lake Geneva and were joined by Andrew Johns.
Fun times
Ah - that makes sense. I didn’t qualify but think may have been chancing my arm. Remember it now. Rutland Water?
I was mixing it up in my mind with a completely different race and year: Big Cow Sprint near Northampton possibly, qualifier for Budapest which I actually did manage.
Both were a long drive away from Dorset, which i guess is why they blur together.
I know Roger Barr fairly well. Good lad. Very very tall.
A high Barr?
What is you Garmin hill score looking like now?

Not really looked at that, my heat and altitude acclimation had improved but already going backwards ![]()
