It was a bad year for gels ‘22, I blame the late rains :sweat_smile:

Cool thanks - high5 have some short dated stuff at 13.99 but Amazon looks the way to go…although Bezos hmm…

I’m taking 60g sugar in a 750ml bottle, two of those and a banana don’t make much dent in 2000+ kcal I’m burning on club rides so two gels gives me another 50g.

60g in 750ml isn’t much. I’m at 140g in 750ml and stomach seems fine. Have you tried a more concentrated mix?

Sounds like you need to get into making rice bites (cakes) :wink: :winking_face_with_tongue: , when you get it right (and the wrapping) you think I should do this more often. There is a bit of skill though, and if a batch goes wrong or a wrapping issue I think why did I bother.

I’d suggest a bottle of ‘heavy’ carb mix and a bottle of water with electrolytes and consume as required, hypdration or carbs.

I did 240g of carbs (Maltodextrin) in a 750 bottle for Swansea 70.3 and an electrolyte high5 tab for flavour, and a 750ml bottle of electrolytes. I took about 4 gels 22g from what I remember, about 60g per hour, fuel wasnt an issues at all.

All that to say you can easily, in theory, put triple what you are in a 750ml bottle, try it, adjust as needed for you.

I often do this too, just to keep my dentist happy. Big gulp of carb mix then swill with water.

How far are you running / riding currently?

You shouldn’t need gels for any rides under 4hrs or runs under 2hrs.

They’re an absolute waste of money.

Do you have caster sugar, pectin and some apple juice? Plus a few soft flasks,
Or similar? Great! Get making your own for pennies. And freeze the remainder for later.

Electrolytes from MyProteinPowder (BCAA, magnesium, caffeine, etc) for pennies, too.

You can buy some drug dealer scales and spoons for cheaper than a dozen gels, so you get the caffeine amounts correct.

your welcome

Like @bbt67 , I’ve tried loads of stuff for racing, but my best results have been;

80min HM off one cup of water
4:27 70.3 with 750ml two scoop mix, and one caffeinated gel (~70g carbs)

I’ll give it a go, but even with 60g there was a lot of sugar undissolved at the bottom last time.

I think it’s more about glycogen burned than time elapsed, and what’s beneficial then what’s needed…I did best performance and composition wise in 2020/2021 when I fuelled workouts.

But yes, I can finish a marathon with no fuel…and no training. Just not very quickly :slightly_smiling_face:

Table sugar and table salt are my go to now, gels I’m seeing for topping up.

I don’t get this :face_with_peeking_eye::joy:

Not aimed at you. I just never paid attention to “The Science”

To dissolve the sugar/sports mix if using a concentrated mix, dissolve a little bit at a time in nearly boiling water. Until all gone. Then water down.

Sorted :white_check_mark::+1:

Jelly Babies, although one very hot day I changed my mind as I ended up with a gloopy mess in my bento box, some Haribo are better though and don’t melt so quickly, I give them to El Niño for swim comps

Sugar is a preservative so always wondered if the date is really much to worry about; WCPGW :rofl:

It makes be wonder how long ago the manufacturing date would be!

Best Before isn’t the same as Eat Before is it? Or did they change that?

Like fresh bread is shite after two days but I’d eat it a week later

As you say… it might not be at its best.

If the label is a ‘Use By’ date they are the important ones to adhere to. Unless you want to make yourself ill.

Best Before - tastes a bit crap after
Use By - could make you ill after

Although certainly going to be some sigma on most of those dates, if it could make you ill, the company are not going to base that date on the mean, more like 99% if not more.

Does not say anything about foods with only a best before

So I assume infinite safety

Exactly this.

I was eating yogurt over 3 weeks past the use by date the other day and it was fine. I’ve also seen, on that one particular product set of course, some of the calcs that they’re using for the dates etc. Plenty of buffer being built in.

Smell it and taste it. Much better indicator than a date on a label.
